The Ancient Stone Chariot, Hampi, Karnataka -– An Architectural Spectacle

The Stone Chariot in Hampi is an artistic marvel that is renowned for its exquisite architecture. The Stone Chariot is located within the Vittala Temple complex that is situated in the north eastern part of Hampi. The striking chariot is considered to be the most fascinating sculptural achievement of the Vijayanagara era.

This stunning structure of Hampi has become one of the most famous symbols of Karnataka Tourism. The structure is a huge attraction for the tourists and is often considered by the visitors as the highlight of their Hampi trail. The Stone Chariot at Hampi is one of the three famous stone chariots in India. The other two chariots are situated in Konark (Odissa) and Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu). History of Stone Chariot, Hampi
**************************************
The Stone Chariot of the Vittala Temple complex is also known as the Kallina Ratha. This ancient structure was built in the 16th century, during the rule of King Krishnadevaraya, one of the greatest kings of the Vijayanagara Empire.

It is believed that the idea for the construction of the chariot dates back to the time when King Krishnadevaraya saw the famous stone chariot at the Konark Sun Temple in Odissa while waging war on the eastern state.

The architecture and beauty of the chariot at Konark Sun Temple fascinated him so much that he decided to construct a similar chariot in his own kingdom, Vijayanagara. As Hampi was the core of the Vijayanagara Empire, he decided to build a magnificent stone chariot in Hampi.

Interestingly, the locals at Hampi believe that the world will be destroyed the day the Stone Chariot of the Vittala Temple moves from its place.

How to reach the Stone Chariot
**************************************
The Stone Chariot within the Vittala Temple Complex in Hampi is located at the end of the ruined Vittala Bazaar. It is a place that can be easily reached by tourist

Virupaksha temple .
.
Virupaksha Temple is located in Hampi in the Ballari district of Karnataka, India. It is part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Shiva.

Virupaksha Temple is the main center of pilgrimage at Hampi, and had been considered the most sacred sanctuary over the centuries. It is intact among the surrounding ruins and is still used in worship . The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Virupaksha, as the consort of the local goddess Pampadevi who is associated with the Tungabhadra River. .
One of the most striking features of this temple is the usage of mathematical concepts to build and decorate it. The temple has repeated patterns that demonstrate the concept of Fractals. The main shape of the temple is triangular. As you look up the temple top, the patterns divide and repeat themselves, just like you would see in a snowflake or some other natural wonders

Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India. It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century. Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.
Located in Karnataka near the modern-era city of Hosapete, Hampi's ruins are spread over 4,100 hectares (16 sq mi) and it has been described by UNESCO as an "austere, grandiose site" of more than 1,600 surviving remains of the last great Hindu kingdom in South India that includes "forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others". Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; there is evidence of Ashokan epigraphy, and it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra. Hampi continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple, an active Adi Shankara-linked monastery and various monuments belonging to the old city.

LOCATION:
************
Hampi is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the eastern part of central Karnataka near the state border with Andhra Pradesh. It is 376 kilometres (234 mi) from Bangalore, 385 kilometres (239 mi) from Hyderabad and 266 kilometres (165 mi) from Belgaum. The closest railway station is in Hosapete (Hospet), 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) away. During the winter, overnight buses and trains connect Hampi with Goa, Secunderabad and Bangalore. It is 140 kilometres (87 mi) southeast of the Badami and Aihole archaeological sites.

DURGA TEMPLE - AIHOLE |
Aihole is considered to be the ‘Cradle of Hindu rock architecture’ due to its beautiful temples.
There are about 100 stone temples in Aihole area constructed between 5th and 8th century AD by Chalukya kings as experimental structures, each having its own unique architecture and style!

This photogenic ‘Durga Temple’ at Aihole of the early Chalukyan era will impress everyone with its exquisite ceilings in the porch of the mukha mandapa, majestic door frame, intricately carved pillar reliefs, heavily decorated walls, pierced windows with pleasing patterns which pass sunlight and of course its unique ‘Gajaprasta’ (Elephant back) architectural style.

Even though the temple features a Durga sculpture, the origin of the name is not because of its dedication to Durga goddess.

With many sculptures of Shiva and Vishnu along the periphery of the temple, it is difficult to ascertain as who was the main Deity (the sanctum is empty) the temple is dedicated to. One theory suggests that this temple was dedicated to Surya Deva.
Period : Chalukya Vikramaditya II (733-46 CE)

Location : Aihole - the first capital (450 CE) of Chalukya kings, Karnataka
