A woman with a parrot, another looking into a mirror and a mysterious woman surrounded by snakes, wearing what first looked to me like platform heels! 👠

At Hosaholalu’s Sri Lakshminarayana Swamy Temple, every sculpture made me stop and look closer.

Indra rides a magnificently adorned Airavata, with Shachi seated behind him. The object that I first thought was a telescope in his hand is actually his vajra—the thunderbolt!

A little further, Durga confronts Mahishasura. Multiple arms, weapons, the buffalo and the demon’s human form—a whole battle unfolding within a single panel.

Then comes Lakshmi–Narayana, seated together - the epitome of beauty!

The parrot-bearing Shukasarika and mirror-holding Darpana Sundari look like ancient India fashion influencers!

But the snake-adorned woman remains an enigma: scholars still debate her identity, and those “heels” are better described as thick-soled sandals.

I visited this three-shrine Hoysala temple in Mandya, Karnataka during my March 2026 tour. Generally dated to around 1250 CE, during Vira Someshwara’s reign, it preserves an extraordinary world of stories carved in stone.

Nearly eight centuries later, I’m still flabbergasted by the detail. The jewellery, the gestures, even the elephant’s ornaments—how much observation, patience and skill went into every inch?

The stones won’t stop talking, and I don’t want to stop reading them.

Swipe back and look closer—which detail did you miss the first time? Tell me in the comments. 👇
