AUTHENTIC TAPAS IN THE HEART OF ANCOATS

David and Jorge are two chefs who feel like they’ve always been destined to work with one another.

They kept crossing each others’ paths in various Spanish restaurants, before they decided to fulfil some long-held dreams and open a restaurant together. @canpetit_ - a welcoming, modern tapas restaurant in Ancoats with a name that roughly means ‘little house’.

The menu is full of well-executed favourites like tortilla and patatas bravas and various croquetas. There are also more elaborate creations, like sardines with a fresh coconut and almond sauce, and mini oxtail sandwiches. The menu changes regularly, so there's always something new to try.

Paella is a big deal too, with David having grown up attending paella-cooking competitions with his family. They don’t cut any corners with process either, cooking everything from scratch every time. The showstoppers are a black ink variety topped with prawns and one topped with a whole Iberica pork pluma.
It’s authentic, delicious and really reasonably priced. We highly recommend seeking it out.

THIS IS HOW THEY DO CASK ALE WEEK AT JOSEPH HOLT BREWERY | ad

One of Manchester’s most recognisable breweries @josephholt know a thing or two about producing cask ale.

With extra fermentation, less carbonation and a warmer drinking temperature, it offers something different - and more traditional - than your fizzy lagers or craft beers.

A real labour of love to produce, we understand why it’s worth celebrating.

We made the short journey up to Cheetham Hill to check out production in action, then made the even shorter journey to @officialspinnersrest to enjoy a pint of Two Hoots, their hand-pulled, zesty golden ale.

A very happy Cask Ale Week to all.

THE MUST-VISIT FLEA MARKET WITH LOADS OF VINTAGE GEMS | ad

You might have seen @remarket_mcr at their huge vintage emporium by Piccadilly Gardens, but did you know they pop up twice a month at the weekends in Ancoats’ Cutting Room Square and Oxford Road’s @circlesquaremcr.

It’s a similar vibe, in that there are established vintage traders like @blankseams and @nicstalgic.finds who specialise in everything from heritage coats and knitwear to y2k womenswear sourced from Japan.

There’s also a real community feel too. With pitches starting from just £20, everyone can get involved whether you’re looking to sell or shop. From car booters like @car_boot_queen and designers like @studio.mimi.design, to people clearing out their houses and independent sellers, there are loads of treasures - and bargains - to be found.

The next flea market is going to be held on Saturday 25 July over at Circle Square. We recommend getting down early for a good rummage.

140 YEAR OLD ITALIAN PROCESSION PARADES THROUGH MANCHESTER

The Madonna Del Rosario procession, which was started by the city’s Italian community in 1888, began on George Leigh Street, once known as Little Italy after the Italian immigrant community who settled there.

Although originally started as a celebration of Italian identity, the procession has been joined by people from across Manchester’s Catholic churches, reflecting the city’s Irish, Polish, Indian, Philippines and African communities.

They are due to arrive at St Peter’s Square around 2:30pm this afternoon. taken in Ancoats by @ancoats_mcr

ERST’S SUNDAY SERVICE RETURNS WITH A PROVENCE-INSPIRED MENU THIS WEEKEND

Sunday Sessions are back at @erst_mcr this weekend, giving the kitchen another opportunity to stretch its creative muscles beyond the already exceptional à la carte offering. Held on the final Sunday of every month, the one-day-only experience costs £50 per person and centres around seasonal menus inspired by different regions.

This month’s five-course menus takes its cues from Provence, celebrating the bright, rustic flavours of sun-drenched southern France under the guidance of head chef Patrick Withington.

To start, there’s a traditional Provençal touch in the form of a glass of pastis, served with a refreshing cube of melon. The menu begins with tapenade and a chickpea pancake, before moving onto a vibrant vegetable and bean pistou soup.

Next comes a generous grand aioli plate, piled with egg, seasonal vegetables and fish, all served alongside the region’s famously punchy garlic mayonnaise. For the main course, guests can expect grilled lamb with roasted aubergine, followed by a classic cherry clafoutis for dessert.

Sunday Sessions are held on the last Sunday of every month, it’s a brilliant way to spend a summer afternoon. Just don’t leave it too late to book.

JOSEPH HOLT OPENS ANCOATS’ ‘NEWEST OLDEST PUB’ AFTER EIGHT YEARS

After closing way back in 2018, Ancoats lost one of its last and oldest community pubs.

And while it’s been a long time coming - The Shamrock has finally become @officialthespinnersrest, thanks to a painstaking restoration that has taken eight years, courtesy of Manchester’s historic brewery @josephholt.

This is a proper local, open to all, and hoping to become a pillar of the community, with great pub grub, top pies, sports on the telly, its very own bespoke lager and an enviable suntrap of a terrace - which when it rains is fully cover-up-able (luckily).

It opens on 29 June. Go down and say hello.

ANCOATS IS GETTING A NEW ‘MODERN PIZZA RESTAURANT’

Behind it are @honestcrustsourdoughpizza mastermind Richard Carver and @rainyheartmcr co-founder Dan Hope, and it’s set to open at One Port Street this summer.

@proloco.mcr will be built around seasonal food, generous hospitality and music, with a menu that changes weekly.

18-inch pizzas will sit alongside sharing plates made with produce from the North West and beyond, including flour grown and milled in the Lake District, vegetables from Cinderwood Market Garden and Organic North, British charcuterie and cheeses. The all-important tomatoes and olive oil will be sourced from Italy.

Sharing dishes will include salt-baked beetroot with ricotta and dill, radicchio agrodolce with stracciatella, and a heap of grilled lamb chops with anchoïade.

The pizza menu will feature the likes of tomato butter pie with marjoram, charred seasonal greens with anchovy, and porchetta with whipped potato and fennel.

Gelato will also be made in-house daily, with flavours rotating regularly.

Drinks will be kept simple, with wine, local beer, aperitivi and a £7 house Negroni.

Music will be a key element of the restaurant too, with a bespoke sound system from Turn End Audio – which also provided sound support at Rainy Heart – installed in the space.

Proloco opens this summer at One Port Street. Soft launch details will be available via proloco.uk. taken in Ancoats by @ancoats_mcr
