Little babies can go from fine to unwell really quickly. Which means knowing what to watch for really matters.

The signs that tell you the most are often simple ones.

How they’re breathing. Whether they’re feeding like usual. How many wet nappies they’ve had. Whether they’re alert and settling, or more sleepy and floppy than normal.

When you know what to check, you can spot changes early, feel more confident managing at home, and know when it’s time to get help.

Learn what to look for in our first aid and sickness course, online at your own pace. Or join us in person if your in Auckland

Hand, foot and mouth is going around 🦠 Here’s what you can expect.

🤒 Common symptoms

Fever and feeling miserable
Sore mouth with ulcers, so eating and drinking hurts
Spots or small blisters on hands, feet and bottom
Grumpy, clingy and off their food

📅 Timeline
Day 1-2 → fever, tired, off food
Day 2-3 → mouth sores start (the sorest part)
Day 3-5 → spots on hands, feet and bottom
Day 7-10 → blisters dry up, back to themselves
A few weeks later → peeling fingers or a nail falling off. Normal, it grows back 💅

💧 Most common complication
Dehydration. A sore mouth means fewer drinks, and little ones dry out fast.

🚨 Less common, but more serious

Severe dehydration
Meningitis - swelling of the protective layers around the brain.
Myocarditis - swelling of the heart muscle

These are rare, but if you see any of them, get your child seen straight away.

💛 Our Sickness Course helps you feel calm and ready when your little one is unwell:
✔️ How to spot dehydration early, and what to count
✔️ How to keep fluids and pain relief going when everything hurts
✔️ When to get help and what type of help to get

As a paeds nurse I see it over and over again. The parents who feel confident in those scary moments aren’t the ones who know everything.

They’ve just practised the first few steps and knew what to do before help arrived

I know finding the time is really really hard

🤍 As a mum, there’s rarely a free moment with little ones.

So I’ve made it simple ⤵️

👶 Babies and little ones are ALWAYS welcome. Feed, rock or settle them while you learn

👐 Hands-on practice on real manikins

🚑 Emergencies, 🤕 injuries and 😷 serious sickness

📍 Just 2 hours, Ponsonby, Auckland

Next course is THIS Sunday with onto a few spot left!!

Rest of the year is filling up fast too

Comment FEVER for the link to the thermometers I’d actually use on a baby, plus how to get a reading you can trust.

In-ear thermometers are everywhere and seem like the best and easy option.

But for little babies, a tiny ear canal and a bit of wax can give you a reading that’s lower than it really is.

That’s not what you want at 2am when you’re trying to decide whether they need a doctor.

The good news is the best option is simple, cheap and probably already in your bathroom cupboard. I’ve put it all in the blog, including what counts as a fever and when to get help.

comment FEVER and I’ll send the link right to your messages

I get asked about thermometers all the time, so I hope this helps xx

12 years as a paeds nurse and this still gets me every time.

Babies are so good at coping, until they’re not. And the signs they’re working hard can be quiet ones.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re overreacting, you’re not. You just haven’t been shown what to look for yet.

The mums in these messages trusted their gut, and they knew what they were seeing.

Comment SICKNESS and I’ll send you the link to get started with our sickness lessons

I’m actually so blown away I don’t event know what to say 😭😭

We don’t find out the winner a few more weeks but being placed up there with some of the countries best small businesses is such an honour

Full disclaimer. Not sure if it is THE biggest but it’s one of the biggest (pretty sure it’s the biggest…). But the biggest for very small businesses with less than 10 employees (like mine) 🥰

1 in 3 children don’t receive CPR when it’s needed - here’s why👇

Most parents want to help but it’s easy to freeze in the moment

❤️ Often it’s because they don’t recognise when to start.

OR

❤️ they’re not confident they will do CPR well enough

You can change that.

🫀 Learn to spot the signs quickly and feel confident you’re doing it right in our (FREE!) Baby CPR Mini Course

Clear, simple steps made for parents.

Comment CPR and we’ll send it straight to you 💬
