Witches, folklore, and a little cinematic weirdness. Just in time for Halloween. 🧙‍♀️🎬

October’s AND Creative Film Club screening is Häxan (1922), a silent film by Benjamin Christensen that explores the history of witchcraft through a fascinating mix of documentary-style storytelling and some seriously eerie visuals.

Part historical study, part horror film, and entirely unlike your typical movie night.

And this screening is a special one. We’re celebrating ONE YEAR of AND Creative’s Film Club!🎉

We’re also pairing the film with our current Folklore & Folktales exhibition, so you can explore the gallery before settling in for a night of cinematic history.

Our resident film nerds will walk us through the soundtrack creation process, and we’ll wrap up with a conversation about the film. Popcorn, drinks, and snacks included, of course.

🎬 Film Club: Häxan (1922)
📅 Friday, October 23 | 6–9 PM
📍 AND Gallery | 1851 McGuckian Street, Annapolis

Come celebrate a year of films that are a little different, a little unexpected, and always worth talking about.

Join us for October’s Film Club!

Meet Martin Beadle.

Martin is an Annapolis-based artist whose work in Folklore & Folktales explores two themes often found in traditional stories: hidden things and transformation.

A lifelong collector, Martin creates masks and assemblages using found objects, textiles, stones, shells, plant pods, and other materials. His three years living in West Africa also influenced his appreciation for creating with natural and repurposed materials.

His work often includes bundles and boxes that conceal special objects, inspired by the hidden keys, buried treasures, and secrets found in folktales.

And then there’s transformation. A piece of wire found on the sidewalk might become part of a mask or wall piece, taking on an entirely new purpose.

As Martin explains, “I can find a piece of runoverwire on the sidewalk and it is often in a beautiful, balanced shape.”

And don’t miss your chance to experience his work in person!

Who is your TRIBE? 🤍
The people who show up… who sit with you through the hard stuff… who remind you that you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Meet @chanteljmiller — our inaugural AND Gallery Fellow.

After losing her mother in late 2019, followed by three more loved ones over the next thirteen months, Chantel began documenting the people who helped carry her through grief. Friends, family, and even strangers who reached for her hand during one of the hardest chapters of her life.

Those portraits became TRIBE. A deeply personal project about love, loss, community, and the people who show up for us when we need them most.

On October 24, Chantel is bringing those stories into the gallery as part of our Folklore & Folktales programming.

TRIBE | Photo Exhibit + Spoken Word
📅 Saturday, October 24 | 4–6 PM
📍 AND Gallery | 1851 McGuckian St, Annapolis

Take a minute to meet Chantel, hear about her TRIBE, and come experience the work in person. 🤍

One last night with Folklore & Folktales. ❤️

This exhibition has been a special one for us. Nine artists brought their own histories, cultures, memories, and interpretations of folklore into the gallery, and we’ve loved seeing the stories they chose to tell.

On Friday, October 30, we’re getting together one more time to celebrate the work, the artists, and everyone who has spent time with this show.

Featuring Martin Beadle, @nikkibrooksart, @thecontrarycaptain, @dfurey0588, @hungryconcrete, @jimmackey0414, Jayla McKay, Felicia Reed, and @beinganike.

If you’ve been meaning to see the exhibition, this is your last chance! If you’ve already visited, come back, revisit your favorite pieces, and spend a little time with us before we take it all down.

Meet Nikki Brooks. (@nikkibrooksart)

Nikki is a ceramic artist whose work in “Folklore & Folktales” looks at hip-hop as folklore happening in real time — a living tradition passed through music, style, language, and community.

Her triptych, Here Come the Beat Heads, Circa 25/26, reimagines hip-hop icons as folk heroes. Handbuilt ceramic figures are crowned with the tools that carried the culture forward: boomboxes and a turntable.

Together, the three figures form a cipher, with references to FUBU, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, and even a lyric from Black Sheep woven into the story.

And the choice of clay is intentional. One of our oldest storytelling materials is being used to hold a much newer mythology.

•
Read more of her story in the AND Journals.

And if you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, come spend one last night with us at the Folklore & Folktales Closing Reception on Friday, October 30 from 6–9 PM.

See Nikki’s work in person, revisit your favorites, and help us give this show a proper send-off. ❤️ taken in AND Creative by @andcreativegallery

What does it mean to find your TRIBE?

For artist and storyteller @chanteljmiller that question became deeply personal…. After losing her mother, niece, grandmother, and aunt within thirteen months, Chantel began photographing the people who showed up. The friends, family, and unexpected people who stayed close, reached for her, and helped carry her through grief.

Those photographs became her TRIBE.

Our Gallery Fellow Chantel Miller brings this deeply personal exhibition to AND Gallery for a night of photography, storytelling, music, and community.

This is a story about loss, but it is also about what showed up alongside it: love, friendship, connection, and the people who become home.

TRIBE: Honoring The Ones Who Kept Me
October 24 | 4-7 pm

Come meet Chantel and the people behind the photographs.

This Friday, Film Club is getting a little haunting. 👻

We’re screening A Ghost Story (2017) — a quiet, beautifully strange film about love, loss, memory, and what gets left behind.

Our Folklore & Folktales exhibition is still on the walls, so come early and wander the gallery before settling in for the film. Two very different ways of exploring the stories we carry with us.

We’ll have popcorn and sips, and we’ll hang around afterward to talk about what we just watched. Because half the fun of Film Club is the conversation after.

AND Film Club: A Ghost Story
THIS Friday, September 25
Doors at 6 PM | Film at 6:30 PM

Come curious. We’ll save you a seat. taken in AND Creative by @andcreativegallery

Make One of My Healing Bags: Carrying Our Stories 🧵
with fiber artist Felicia L. Reed

Inspired by All That She Carried by Tiya Miles, this one is close to the heart. We carry bags for what we need — but also for what we value, remember, protect, and pass forward.

Join award-winning fiber artist Felicia L. Reed for an intimate hands-on workshop, crafting a one-of-a-kind Healing Bag from vintage and repurposed fabric, trims, and embellishments.

Through gentle coaching and storytelling, you’ll sit with a few questions along the way:
What do I carry?
What am I ready to release?
What do I want to carry forward?

No sewing experience needed — just an open hand and an open heart.

You’ll leave with more than a bag: a vessel for memory, intention, healing, and connection to those who carried before us.

We carry bags.
We carry stories.
We carry each other forward.

Meet Felicia L. Reed.

Felicia is an international award-winning fiber artist creating Healing Wraps from silk, wool, vintage fibers, repurposed textiles, and found materials using the ancient process of wet felting.

She calls them “wearable folklore.”

Each piece carries stories of memory, ancestry, resilience, and healing—bringing together loose fibers through water, pressure, friction, and time.

As Felicia puts it — “The process of binding loose fibers through water, pressure, friction, and time mirrors our own journeys of healing.”
