In the undercroft of Bergamo’s Palazzo della Ragione one discovers the Meridiana-Analemma of 1798, with its gnomone that creates a ray of sunlight each day at mezzogiorno, which over a whole year traces la Curva a Otto. The passage of the ray of sunlight is marked with the months and days of the year, and the signs of the zodiac. A century ago, avowed fascist Mussolini hijacked the ongoing construction of the Stazione Centrale’s headhouse in Milan, and added gobs of this dreadfully scaled and detailed decoration. 20 years later he was deposed and killed by actual antifascists, and hung by his ankles. This building does serve as a reminder of fascism’s ultimate fate. A bit later that very modernist high-rise by Nervi and Ponti actually did help make Italy great again.
