Join us this summer at Swale House!

SOIL SHROUD ROOM at Swale House, Governors Island, NYC

Launching May 16 at 1pm EDT

Nolan Park, Building 6b

Through October 25, 2026

The Soil Shroud Room, presented by ecoartspace, brings together textiles previously submerged in soils from around the world as an artistic expression of the minerals and microorganisms that connect us with ancestral lands. Since 2023, over thirty artists have participated in the online Soil Dialogues, where the concept of burying and transforming textiles was simultaneously initiated in England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Oman, Canada, Australia and the US.

This summer, visitors to Swale House are invited to contribute to this international collaborative work, to bury, clean, paint, print, embroider, and stitch together soil textiles into an ever-growing collective shroud.

On view within the space in various stages of progress, textiles will hang from clotheslines. These soil expressions will be sewn together during monthly programs. If you would like to participate, we invite you to bury a textile in the nearby garden on Governors Island or in your backyard.

We will be holding monthly Zoom events where you can receive instructions if you would like to participate from afar (email info@ecoartspace.org).

Saturday, May 16, 1-2pm

Patricia Watts will give a public introduction to the Soil Shroud Room outlining the events and outcomes leading up to this installation, and review historical soil artists as she has written about in the recent ecoartspace publication Soils Turn

Saturday, June 20, 2-4pm

Lauren Alyssa Bierly and Melinda K. Santiago, learn the textile burial process and how to clean exhumed textiles

Saturday, July 11, 2-3pm

From Assembling to Witnessing talk with Dr. Alexandra R. Toland, exploring different practices of making work with and about soils as featured in the book Soils Turn, with Pamela Casper who will describe her soil textile process

Thank you @artiq_cm and Constance Mallinson for this lovely writeup! Posted @withregram • @artiq_cm Andrea Bersaglieri’s “Underblossom”, Charcoal on Paper, 100X144”, 2023. Featured at Stuart Haaga Gallery Descanso Gardens in the Exhibition “0 Horizon” curated by Carole Ann Klonarides on view through September 2023

At a commanding scale, Bersaglieri’s richly detailed 2 part horizontal charcoal drawing depicts an outsized cutaway slice of soil surface and its substratum. Adhering closely to the theme of the exhibition described by Klonarides as comparing a forest floor ecosystem with its own language (tree roots are now known to communicate), intelligence and mutual interdependencies with human life, the artist reveals the usually unnoticed roots, rocks, clumps, tubers, fungi, compressed rotting and decaying matter beneath our feet to draw metaphors of nature/human/culture interconnectedness. Alongside her scientifically meticulous watercolor renderings of dead birds done during the pandemic (and rightfully memorializing those dying from COVID with the expired birds) Bersaglieri’s work resonates with a Ruskinian love of nature and its faithful representation. Every “lowly bank and mouldering stone” for Ruskin had divine purpose and beauty and he wrote of organisms cohering and cooperating with fundamental laws that extended from nature to art to society. Viewing these stunning artworks indeed feels like a 19th century throwback to Romantic era art technical prowess and poetry. Further emphasizing the nature/art associations, the artist mimics the soil microbes themselves as they both create fertile soil with their life enriching processes. Placing her squarely in the present however, is the oscillation between abstraction and figuration underscored by craggy white voids near the bottom of the drawing where fragments break loose and fall away from the whole as if shaken by an earthquake. In light of Bersaglieri’s mind for metaphor, the suggestion of impending destruction of the underground ecosystem seems to forebode the same for us. by @andi_bers

TONIGHT!

I love Narsiso so much and am so grateful to be part of the group show he curated alongside incredible artists. His solo show is nothing short of stunning as usual.

Join us tonight for the opening party -

Narsiso Martinez
Eat Happy
969 CHUNG KING ROAD
SEPTEMBER 25 - NOVEMBER 7, 2026
OPENING RECEPTION: SEPTEMBER 25, 5-8PM
By incorporating found objects and working at the intersection of figuration, installation, and sculpture, Martinez calls attention to the dissonance between agricultural abundance and the exploitation of those who make it possible. His art challenges viewers to consider the systems behind the food they consume, and the people whose labor sustains them — many of whom remain undocumented and unprotected.
The show will be supported by Food and Beyond, Beyond Food, a group exhibition that connects four female artists from different cultural backgrounds through the idea of food and nourishment. Curated by Narsiso Martinez, the show features works by Andrea Bersaglieri, Ashley Jose-Isip, Jessy Slim, and Karen Tepaz. The show will run concurrently with Narsiso Martinez’s solo exhibition “Eat Happy”.

FRIDAY Sept 25th 5-8pm!

Narsiso Martinez will be opening his solo show at Charlie James Gallery titled Eat Happy. He has curated a group show called Food and Beyond Beyond Food to coincide with his show.

Beyond and Food Beyond Food is a group exhibition that connects four female artists from different cultural backgrounds through the idea of food and nourishment. Andrea Bersaglieri’s black and white large charcoal drawings of soil reminds us that fertile land is not forever, and that we need to take care of it so that in return, it can continue to nourishing us. Jessy Slim’s usage of chickpeas as “paint” not only reminds us that art materials can come from the least expected sources, but also this chickpea “paint” helps her grapple with nostalgia from her homeland in Lebanon. Ash Jose references a multiplicity of elements like fast food restaurants, artificial sweets, and plates to explore the Filipino-American identity. She questions the artificiality of what we put in our bodies and impermanence of our surroundings. Karen Tepaz’s abstract and organic shaped ceramic sculptures allude to motherhood and nourishment. These artists, individually, have their own perspectives and practices, but what is similar is their emphasis on the subject of nourishment in many ways beyond food.

Our first artist highlight of the 2026-2027 season is Andrea Bersaglieri in “Haptic Knowing.”

Bersaglieri, known for her analytical, observation drawings, paintings and prints, explores organic specimen found in urban and surban communities. She focuses on the soil, investigating the particulars of nature in her immediate surroundings to reveal universal answers to unformed questions about her observations of the world around her.

Visit the muesum today to learn more about Bersaglieri’s process and to see her exploratory work up close!

Open September 3 - November 7, 2026.

Monday through Friday 10am-4pm,
Saturday 11am-5pm.
