Harana was an old courtship tradition in the Philippines where young men would serenade ladies outside their windows.

In honor of Filipino American History Month, here is a tribute to the harana: “Ikaw” by Mike Velarde Jr., a song featured in The Romance of Magno Rubio. 🇵🇭

Throwback to this past summer working with @theateralaska in Juneau, a place rich with Filipino-American history.

Please don’t judge my attempt at Tagalog too harshly, fluent speakers! Salamat! 🙏🏽🙈

The Romance of Magno Rubio. A poetic Filipino epic set in 1930s America exposing the disillusionment of the American dream, exploitation of brown bodies, and most of all the indomitable Filipino spirit 💪🏽😤; and nonetheless, all written in beautifully imaginative poetry, prose, and soliloquy.

It's very rare to see a Filipino story in the spotlight, especially one made for and by Filipinos. Being directed by and performing among my kuyas (and ates ✨) was truly nourishing for my soul ❤️.

It was surreal listening to the stories of our audience members and how some of their parents and grandparents followed the story we told, eventually landing them in Juneau.

Thank you sm @theateralaska for letting us laugh, cry, sing, shout, and embody the brave ones who came before. Thank you to @filcom.juneau for letting us rehearse and perform in our historic space.
(Also for all the free food 😋)

Happy world theatre day!!! To commemorate, here is a dump containing most of the theatrical things I've been doing.

1-2 Played Antigonus and Autolycus in Winters Tale and true to the name, our winter snowed us in two weekends in a row 😳☃️. Despite that raucous laughter was had and tender tears were shed.

3 Juggled for a cause! Helping raise money for Carolina Migrant Network. @agh.show 🙂‍↕️

4-7 Yours truly played "Boy" in Cat in the Hat! A physically demanding and challenging show that made me look again at my voice and movement work from grad school 🤓

8 Why be a healthcare worker when u can just pretend to! Disappointing my Pinoy blood, I played a paramedic for a 48 film festival and we won the audience choice award! 🧑🏽‍⚕️ @48hfp_charlotte

9 Got to play Ferdinand in The Tempest! We were outside in a lovely park desperately avoiding falling walnuts 🤪

10 Hung out with my friends in New Hampshire and Toured an original TYA Musical: Tommer's Earthy Friends, kindling curiosity and interest in nature 🍃⛰️

11 Played a Jazz set on piano for @tracecasanova00 Christmas show, and as a cherry on top had a slide whistle solo LMAO

12 Here we see the Music Man in his natural habitat, teaching his preschool classes all about composers and instruments! MANY different theatrical tactics are utilized to teach and keep attention 😊. Iykyk 🫩

13 Lastly I get to be a simulated participant (pretend patient for med students)! Here is my baby Greg 😁

This year has been a ✨super slay✨ and I'm so grateful that I get to spread joy and catharsis thru theatre. Here's to another fabulous year 🎭 taken in Stage by @andre.braza
