Meet our WL Maker of the Year 2025, @andreacoppceramics ☁️⁠

Two years ago, Andrea Copp felt like she was in the midst of some pretty big life turmoil. She was “navigating a period of profound personal change,” she says, including the sudden loss of her home and the aftermath of a shattering divorce.⁠
⁠
So perhaps it’s no surprise that our 2025 Maker of the Year finds a theme of resilience in both her work and life. Her work often explores the changing nature of life—and one’s ability to embrace both change and impermanence. Cloud Never Dies, for example, is an open-mouthed ceramic vessel incorporating sky blue and swirls of cloud-like white.⁠

To my great surprise and quiet honour, I’ve been named a finalist in the Western Living Designer of the Year Awards, in the One-of-a-Kind Maker category.

To be recognised among such talented artists, designers, and makers—each shaping their own world—feels extraordinary. My work is slow, raw, intuitive. It leans into storytelling and nature. I put everything into it: memory, feeling, form. To have that seen and heard, especially in the company of others who value process and material truth, feels deeply special.

Thank you, Western Living. I’m grateful to be included.

Carmaria, 2026

The moment has come. Months in the making. I’m too excited to contain myself, so I’m not going to.

Ta-da! Pièce de résistance 🍾 🥂

What began with wild imaginings became the challenge of conveying what was in my mind to the designer and client. From scrappy sketches to realistic visuals, the conversation grew and grew. The idea was nurtured, and through it all, trust grew between us all.

Trust gave this idea room to evolve and ultimately take form.

Thank you to @brettpatt for turning my scrappy sketches into realistic visuals, and to @vertigo66 and @jtshane for the all-important mounting and hardware help.

And, of course, the extraordinary mirror work by @carlababcockartanddesign we made a dream team, so wonderful to discover her work.

Thank you to @hungerfordinteriordesign for her interior design vision, and to the clients themselves for their enthusiasm and trust.

It’s all coming together.

Months in the making. So much fun looking back at the early sketches and seeing how things have evolved — from wild imaginings to sketches, little cutouts, experiments and conversations.

She’s 95% up on the wall. A few more days and she’ll be complete.

Super thrilled — it’s all coming together.

Paper-thin ceramic shards, amber glass-ceramic tiles, and this texture I keep returning to — found in trees, rocks, shadows between leaves.

Couldn’t have brought it all to reality without the most fabulous people around it: interiors by @hungerfordinteriordesign handmade mirror work by @carlababcockartanddesign and Jeremy @gwilsonconstruction helping mount everything with incredible precision, and of course the visionary clients for trusting the process.
About 95% up on the wall now. So excited to share more over the next few days/next week…

And yes, I love the new hat I made. I think it’s already giving me new ideas! 🥂 taken in North Vancouver, British Columbia by @andreacoppceramics

The time has come.

After months of sketches, paper cutouts, spirals, fragments, testing and reworking, it’s finally beginning to fall into place.

Paper-thin ceramics, glass tiles, handmade mirror, texture, light and shadow — all starting to meet.

With @hungerfordinteriordesign creating the beautiful interior, and @carlababcockartanddesign supplying the exquisite handmade mirror. Dream team.

A fantastic evening at Panova @natmariamyles and Janie @hungerfordinteriordesign arranging moss, flowers n grapes along with my Golden Hour sets! Such brilliant women, music, wet paint in motion @papou____ genius food @salty_world_studios music @pabloz74 was all fabulous! xx,A 🙏

I’ve developed an irreverent nature.

A respect for the material, but not too much obedience.

I like to move past the rules, stay loose, and leave room for whatever wants to happen.

There’s resilience in that too — whether it’s an explosion in the kiln, an unexpected fall, a lover who leaves.

You keep moving. You make with what remains.

I Trust Your Absence Will Remain
September 2026

At first, I titled this piece Absent.

Absent has a sense of casually missing—
expected, but not yet arrived.

Merely absent?

Then came trust.

Trust that you’ll be there.
Trust that you’ll stay.
Trust that you’ll leave.

Trust in you.
Trust in myself.

And finally, remain.

Remain, as in stay.
Remain, as in what is left over from the whole.
Or simply, remaining the same—
head cocked,
knowing change is inevitable.

Remain.

Moon jars with a West Coast twist, full of rocks and things.
