Emmys!

The hour by hour story of my night at the Emmys is in my Stories / Highlights but safe to say it was beyond anything I could ever have imagined. Somehow I ended up seated in the second row with some of my favourite All Her Fault cast members and with a bird's eye view of the stage.
The entire ceremony and the Governer's Ball afterwards was an absolutely gorgeous celebration of the art and craft of storytelling in TV form and I inhaled every second of it.
The story of how I ended up there started five years ago when Nigel Marchant of Carnival happened across a Sunday Times review of All Her Fault and decided he wanted to adapt it for TV 💫
The story of All Her Fault goes back further to the real playdate that inspired the book – I went to pick up my daughter only to find she wasn't there 😳
The story of my love for TV goes back much, much further – a childhood dedicated to watching shows like the A-Team, Macgyver, The Fall Guy, Remington Steele, The Kids from Fame, Moonlighting, and Chips. I loved TV back when it was seen as the slightly lower brow sister to film and I still loved it when shows began featuring A-list actors previously only seen in cinemas. Along with reading, watching TV is my favourite hobby – as long as there's storytelling in any form, I'm here for it.

Thank you for all the good wishes, I had the time of my life, and huge thanks to Leah Middleton, Carnival, and NBCU for getting me here (figuratively and literally) thanks to @designerroom.ie for the Só by Rhoda dress – go to Rhoda for ANY dress rental needs, she is amazing, thanks to @cocoalexanderlive for my hair which I adored, and to @dublindamo who stayed home with the kids and basically made all of this (since the early days, not just this) possible xxxx by @andreamaraauthor

News!

I am so so happy to say that It Should Have Been You has won Crime Fiction Book of the Year at the An Post Irish Book Awards 🙌

Thank you so much to everyone who voted, to An Post, to our category sponsors, The Book Centre, and to all my friends in the room and on the live stream – click through to my Stories to see what they surprised me with after my speech 😍

(Also swipe to see who photo-bombed a pic of Jane Casey and me 👀)

I am very lucky to have an amazing editor, Finn Cotton, and an amazing agent, Diana Beaumont, and to work with fantastic teams in Penguin Ireland and Transworld, and brilliant publicists Leonor Arujo and Becky Short, with equally brilliant marketing from Jen Porter. Thanks also to Jeramie Orton and Bhavna Chauhan my US and Canadian editors who worked on this. I'll stop listing names now because that's how people get left out, but I am so grateful, so happy, and so ready for the weekend after the 2 am finish at what is always the best night of the publishing year.

PS huge love to my family with additional thanks to my kids for sorting themselves out for dinner last night and to my husband for the photos, the company, the prosecco, the bag carrying, the taxi hailing, the coffee this morning and surely he'll make some toast for me soon 😀

I don't quite know how to explain what last night felt like, sitting in the theatre watching the first  episode with the cast of All Her Fault, but I will try!

Ten years ago, I arrived to collect my daughter from a playdate only to find that nobody lived in the house. For a minute, I thought she'd been kidnapped, then I found out the family had simply moved to a new house and I had the old address.

Six years ago, I decided to write this playdate story for my fourth book.

Four years ago, All Her Fault was published and unbeknownst to me, Nigel Marchant of Carnival, the production company who made Downton Abbey, was reading the Sunday Times and took note of their August 2021 Crime Novel of the Month. He bought the book and read it, and two months later, I got an email from my TV agent to say Carnival would like to meet about optioning All Her Fault.

This time last year, I was in Melbourne, watching filming.

And last night, I had the best night of my entire life at the premiere.

Sitting across the aisle from Dakota, with Abby one row behind her, Jake one row ahead, and Sarah in the next row, watching them play Jenny, Lia, Peter and Mrissa, people I made up in my head at my kitchen table is a feeling I'll never forget.

And the well wishes here over the last few days have been so uplifting – everyone has been extraordinarily lovely. My best friends, the most amazing friends anyone could wish for, surprised me by arranging hair and makeup, spearheaded by powerhouse pal Lucy. The book is about a missing child, yes, but it's also hugely about female friendship, and this has been carried through to the TV show. I know a lot about female friendship and women supporting women because of the wonderful people I'm lucky to know in real life. So even if the kidnap element of the real life inspiration is fictional, the friendship element is absolutely true.

You can see All Her Fault on Peacock on Thursday (US) and on Sky/ Now on Friday (Ire/ UK).

PS swipe for the photo of the Succession cast reunion to support Sarah 😍

AND we met Cousin Greg!

And we took home the branded napkins 😀

New book announcement!

I BLAME THE PARENTS coming May 2027 is about Ellen who's at home with her son one stormy night while her husband has gone to collect their daughter.
The wind and rain get worse, and there's a report in their community WhatsApp group about a car accident nearby.
Worried, she tries her husband and daughter but can't reach them.
Then there's a knock on the door and she opens it to find two uniformed police officers on her door-step.
Her legs go weak, her worst fears are realised... but then they tell her why they're there and it's something else entirely 👀

Available to pre-order now in all the usual places ‐ links in bio and on Stories, and cover coming soon!

What's your greatest fear?

That's the question that came up in our Irish Murderesses WhatsApp group one day (a group chat of Irish women crime writers) and suddenly* ta dah, it's a book!

32 short stories, all crime, each one loosely or tightly based around a specific fear. (If you read mine, DM me to tell me what you think my fear is 👀)

The book is for charity, with each author and both editors donating their work for free, and every cent of royalties going to Women's Aid.

The book goes on sale this Thursday and is available to pre-order now if you'd like to get it through your letterbox or arriving on your Kindle.

We're launching it in Eason Dun Laoghaire this Thursday (15th) at 6.30pm and EVERYONE is welcome. Caps necessary because each time I post about an event like this, people tell me afterwards they didn't think 'everyone' included them. It does!

If you're in or around Dublin, please come along, buy a book for a good cause, and get it signed by any or all of the 21 of us who'll be there.

There are FEAR events taking place too at Murder One this weekend, plus heaps more crime writer events – full details at @murderonefest or on the website.

I'll be there on Saturday for the 2pm and 4pm events, and my own event at 6pm with Jane Casey and Catherine Ryan Howard and I'll be back on Sunday for three more events before the festival wraps for another year.

(*Suddenly = months of work by our incredible editors Sam Blake and CL Murphy)

The question of the weekend: Is Lire En Poche a book festival with incredible food and wine or is it in fact a food and wine festival with a side of book signing? Whatever the answer, it is the most well-organised, well-run, well-catered book festival I've ever been to, with the most amazing group of volunteers looking after driving authors and publishers between the festival and their hotels, cooking to-die-for food, serving wonderful Bordeaux wine, all on top of their normal day-jobs in the town of Gradignan. I've never seen anything like it and will be begging to go back.

It was lovely, as always, to meet French readers, sign books, meet new friends (hi Muriel @un_bonbon_sur_la_langue and Arttu @styyujyuominrn) and hang out with my fab pocket book publishers @editionsPoints who looked after me so well.

Events in other languages can be challenging but this one was a joy – made easy with excellent translating by Eva La Pallec and excellent questions from Hubert Arthus.

And a highlight for sure: dinner in a chateau on Saturday night and the midnight, torchlit walk by the vineyard to go back to the car. A crime novel waiting to happen.

Merci, @LireEnPoch_Gradignan ! by @andreamaraauthor

Oh September, you break me every year. The absolute chaos and overwhelm of returning to school, new bus routes, new teachers, new sports teams, a college start, lunchbox lethargy, homework, homework, homework, exhaustion. (Side note, people who love September and have kids, tell me your secrets – how do you do it?)

Anyway, there was good stuff amid the chaos – a university start, a debs and a 19th birthday for my eldest, a gorgeous night out in Dion with my very best friends, a U2 pop up concert on Grafton Street while I happened to be there, Bloody Scotland in Stirling, Mordsharz Festival in Germany, Spike Island festival in Cork, a photoshoot for FEAR, and of course (I'm never going to get tired of talking about it) the Emmys 💫💫💫

Professional photos above by @paulandrewreich and @amyelizafrahill

During October, I'll mostly be doing line edits for next year's book (details coming soon), working on the plan for my 2028 book, but also the following events:

Limerick: @eigse_michael_hartnett on Sunday October 4th at 2.30pm in Longcourt House Hotel where I'lll be interviewed by fabulous @mcdonagh.michelle

Bordeaux: I'll be at the @lireenpoche_gradignan festival for the weekend of October 9th to 11th

Dun Laoghaire: our very own @murderonefest takes place October 16th to 18th in Lexicon with a launch for our FEAR crime anthology in Eason Dun Laoghaire on Thursday 15th – come have your book signed by all 32 authors if you're free!

Brussels: I'll be at the @IrisNoirBruxelles Festival on Friday October 30th

Wow. For years I've been hearing how good Bloody Scotland is, and having made it there this weekend, I understand now what people mean, and it's even more amazing than I thought it would be. I don't know what the secret sauce is – maybe the organisers, the town of Stirling, the fact that it's somehow a big, international crime festival but manages to feel intimate and cosy too? Or is it the sheer friendliness, the ease of the green room, the walkability of the location? Is it that everyone mixes – authors of twenty bestsellers and debuts who are just starting out? Maybe it was my really fun panel with Liz, Harriet and brilliant questions from Bryan and fab reading from Angela Clegg, or the really fun dinner with Tanya, Sam, Jane, Remi  . . .   Or was it the karaoke? It might be the karaoke!

Karaoke pics above, videos on my phone, and staying on my phone 👀

I am crossing EVERYTHING they'll let me back, I loved it. AND I got to keep the water bottle 🙌

Spike! Books, coffee, boats, gossip, brunch, panels, cake, breakfast, wine, and accidentally joining a 90th birthday celebration at the hotel this morning (they offered me cake, I have never said no to cake).

On the train home now, five days of edits ahead, then LA, Germany and Scotland all in ONE WEEK. (I am exhausted just from the train/ bus/ train journey from Cobh but I'm sure it will be absolutely doing all those flights in seven days, fiiiinnnnne.)

The professional photos above are by the wonderful @amyelizafrahill who always makes us look better than we did 😀
