Nine Buildings, Stripped (Tlapa), 2023

The facade for the fashion store #Tlapa on Vienna #Favoritenstrasse was designed in the 1960s by architect #KurtStiel. The building complex was demolished in 2019, the new building is being finished right now. My work combines elements from the uniquely designed old facade with a sample of the new one. Both aluminum, both whitish, both curvilinear... 50 years apart.

All my life I have been traveling between Budapest and Vienna. Often by car, passing the Hegyeshalom border station.
The border and customs building is standing empty since 2007 (when Hungary joined Schengen) and is currently being demolished. When I drove to Budapest last weekend, of course I stopped and got out. I walked over to the workers, asking if they have some tiles from the facade, which they had not really started dismantling yet. They were friendly and invited me in. So I looked around, took photographs and picked up some marble pieces from the floor. Then I realized, that a worker outside ran a huge excavator against the facade. I heard tiles falling down and felt very lucky to have catched such a perfect time to pass by. But it was no coincidence, he had done it for me, so I can have some tiles and take them with me! (Also, the same day I received a prize from @epiteszforum.hu, so it was indeed a pretty lucky day:)

Happy to announce the publication of Arch+ 244, with some works from the series #NineBuildingsStripped on the outside and inside of the cover. The current issue deals with #Vienna and it’s rich tradition of (public) housing and gives a great overview of current projects and discourses.
The work on the cover consists of architectural fragments from the former #Südbahnhof railway station and #ErsteCampus, the building that stands in its place today. (collection of @mak_vienna)

Andreas Fogarasi
𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑠

Schleifmühlgasse 17
through September 30

Lombardi—Kargl is pleased to present 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑠, the eighth solo exhibition by Andreas Fogarasi at the gallery. Light serves as a unifying motif, linking the works materially and conceptually. The collection, organization, and transformation of materials, as well as their relocation into new contexts, are among the central strategies of his artistic practice.
Initiated in 2003, towards the end of his studies, the series 𝑃𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑠 emerged from Fogarasi's research into the logos and visual identities of public administration. During this period, cities, regions, and nation-states increasingly developed distinct brand identities, embodying a neoliberal understanding of governance. They came to perceive themselves as competing brands and economic locations, employing the visual language of corporate identity to position themselves within a global marketplace. In the video work 𝐸𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑎 (2016/2026), the tourism logos of European countries appear in alphabetical order as a slowly evolving sequence of black-and-white images projected onto a screen suspended between floor and ceiling with a deliberately minimal display structure. Detached from their advertising context and reduced to their graphic form, the logos become visual condensations of national identity, while exposing the remarkable uniformity underlying their claims to uniqueness and recognizability.

Thank you for the great presentation of the new book From Wall to Wall.

@heikeeipeldauer

Thanks to @anna.liska for her beautiful and careful design, to @spectorbooks and the writers @heikeeipeldauer, @floragado and #DamianLentini and to many more people along the way!

This first extensive monograph on the Austrian/Hungarian artist Andreas Fogarasi covers twenty years of his work, with large-scale, full-color images, new essays by Damian Lentini and Flóra Gadó, and an interview with the artist by Heike Eipeldauer. Designed by Anna Liska.

In his conceptual practice that merges methods of abstraction and documentarism, Fogarasi engages with the histories of cultural production, with architecture, design and urbanity. The resulting sculptural works explore how social values, power relations and national self-images are inscribed in forms, surfaces and urban spaces.

Andreas Fogarasi (*1977) lives and works in Vienna. Fogarasi’s work was exhibited widely in Europe and beyond, solo exhibitions were held, among others, at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid, Ludwig Forum, Aachen, GfZK, Leipzig, and Trafó Gallery, Budapest, as well as at the Hungarian Pavilion at the 52. Biennale di Venezia, where he was awarded the Golden Lion prize.

Damian Lentini is deputy director and chief curator at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen. Flóra Gadó is an independent curator and writer based in Brussels and Budapest. Heike Eipeldauer is a curator at mumok in Vienna.

@museuminprogress invited me to create four flags for Stubenbrücke - between the MAK and the Hilton Hotel, and they will be up for a few more days, look up if you're passing by!

"Branding the Public (Austria)", 2026

Within the framework of the project raising flags by museum in progress – the 39th contribution to the series – Andreas Fogarasi designed four flags titled Branding the Public (Austria), each featuring a well-known Austrian visual symbol. The selected signs represent the visual identity of state and state-affiliated institutions during the respective period and are deeply embedded in the collective memory:

AUA (1972–2003)
ORF (1968–2002)
ÖBB (1974–2004)
Made in Austria (1978–2004)

By removing these signs from their original functional contexts and transferring them onto the form of the flag, Fogarasi transforms them into emblematic signs of national self-representation. The flags do not function as carriers of explicit messages; rather, they operate as visual condensations of institutional presence, economic power and state-driven identity formation. Their apparent neutrality simultaneously points to the saturation of public space by logos and signets that promise orientation and mark belonging.

The flags unfold their impact in the tension between everyday familiarity and symbolism. Fogarasi's intervention makes visible the extent to which national identity is mediated through design, brand aesthetics and visual recognisability. At the same time, it reveals how strongly these forms of representation are bound to specific historical moments. All four pictograms were created in the years of social upheaval following 1968 and fell out of use in the period of increasing deregulation shortly after the turn of the millennium. Fogarasi thus sets signal markers of collective temporal experience.

In this way, the flags become mobile projection surfaces for questions of representation, authority and the role of public institutions. At the same time, they invite reflection on the transformation of visual languages in the context of social and state change over time.

THE MATERIAL SHOW at @mqwien Freiraum runs until this Sunday, don't miss! It is open daily 10-18 and I will be around for tours tonight (Wednesday 18h) and tomorrow (Thursday 10h).

Together with Astrid Peterle and initially Verena Kaspar-Eisert we created a show about architecture and materiality that includes works by me and a dozen other artists from Vienna and beyond: Lara Almarcegui, Hannes Böck, Cäcilia Brown, Werner Feiersinger, Andreas Fogarasi, Daria Koltsova, Little Warsaw, Markéta Othová, Bianca Pedrina, Nick Relph, Iris Touliatou, Christoph Weber

My own work “Nine Buildings, Stripped (Sophie)” consists of material fragments of the old Sophienspital, Vienna (built 1999, demolished 2023, architect Martin Kohlbauer) and of the new building in its place (architect Martin Kohlbauer), the layers tightly bound together with steel strapping band.

So this is a two-in-one post about the history of that building and the spatiality of the exhibition:)
