POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week, we hosted the Berlin edition of Beyond Bare Life. Neglected by Institutionalized Care: a wonderful two-day series of events featuring talks, a film screening, creative workshops, an exhibition tour, and performances. Over two inspiring days, we shared ideas, exchanged experiences, asked difficult questions, and created space for meaningful conversations. It was filled with thought-provoking moments and lots of fun.

A heartfelt thank you to all the participants who contributed to the programme, to our collaborators and speakers, and to the enthusiastic visitors who joined us on this journey.

Stay with us, we'll be back soon with the next chapter of the Beyond Bare Life project.

What Can the Baby Already Do? Maternal Care Under Socialism.
Come and deconstruct your book with us...and learn something about Emmi Pikler.

In 1940, the Hungarian paediatrician Emmi Pikler published What Can the Baby Already Do?, a book that would accompany generations of parents and appear in numerous translations. In West Germany, it became widely known under the title Friedliche Babys, zufriedene Mütter (Peaceful Babies, Happy Mothers), first published in 1982. In a conversation with historian Annina Gagyiova, Fátyol will explore Emmi Pikler’s legacy, the reception of her work in Germany, and the ways family history resonates in her own artistic practice. Their dialogue opens up broader questions about motherhood, memory, and the stories and images that shape our understanding of both. Visitors are invited to join the conversation and explore the art of liberation through creative acts.

26. June 2026
venue: Tieranatomisches Theater Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Campus Nord, Philippstraße 13/Haus 3, 10115 Berlin
13.30 - 14.00: Introduction by Dóra Vargha, Eszter Lázár, Edina Nagy, organizers and curators of the programme Beyond Bare Life - Berlin Edition
14.00 - 15.30: Creating Histories Beyond the Binaries. Workshop & conversation with Aliz Farkas, artist, Kate Fischer, historian of medicine and Ketil Slagstad, physician and historian of medicine.
In an open discussion with researchers, we will explore ways of working with historical sources to recuperate silenced voices of gender and sexual minorities — examining collaborative and archival strategies that uncover perspectives through personal representation, medical files, and the press. In the second half of the workshop, through an interactive creative process, we will combine these historical materials with our own thoughts to create an artistic approach.
15.30 - 16.00: Coffee break
16.00 - 18.10: Tripperburgs and Controlling Unruly Women in the GDR. Film Screening and conversation.
16.00 - 17.20: Tina Bara: Harriet (75 min) in German, with English subtitles
17.30 - 18.15: In conversation (in German, with English translation) Tina Bara, photographer and filmmaker and Fruzsina Müller, historian of medicine.
HARRIET portrays a resilient woman who was subjected to severe persecution in the GDR, of a kind that is regarded as one of the darkest chapters of the forty-year socialist history of the German Democratic Republic.
The point of departure for the conversations between filmmaker and photographer Tina Bara and Harriet are the so-called “Tripperburgen” (‘gonorrhoea castles’), which were established from the 1960s onwards in all major cities across the country. These were venereology wards operating within state medical institutions, to which young women suspected of carrying sexually transmitted diseases were forcibly committed: they were confined for several weeks and subjected to involuntary treatment. Harriet is one of the women whose lives were traumatically affected by this experience.

HODWORKS: BODY STATE III
26. June 2026.
18:30–19:30
venue:
Tieranatomisches Theater Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Campus Nord, Philippstraße 13/Haus 3, 10115 Berlin

Body State III is part of HODWORKS’ three-part dance performance series Body State I–III, developed within the framework of the Beyond Bare Life. Neglected by Institutionalized Care project.

For the Berlin edition, HODWORKS presents Body State III.
Performers: Károly Tóth, Jessica Simet, Imola Kacsó, Márton Gláser
Choreography: Adrienn Hód

The performance seeks to uncover the intersubjective power structures that permeate institutionalized care while simultaneously re-examining the relationship between the individual and the self. In a world that is increasingly aestheticized and permeated by violence, how can we maintain genuine care for the well-being of our bodies, with all their frailty and vulnerability? What do we allow ourselves, and to what extent? Is it even possible to arrive at a clear and truthful understanding of our bodily well-being?

In the grey area between care and will, the work focuses on bodily sensations and explores what care means as a relationship to ourselves and to others.
Founded in 2007 by Adrienn Hód, HODWORKS has become one of Hungary’s leading independent contemporary dance companies. The ensemble of freelance artists is active both in Hungary and internationally. Their performances explore uncharted, boundary-pushing directions, often focusing on the human body in its most fundamental physicality. Questions concerning the body’s existential condition, shaped by the shifting dynamics and fragile balance between health and illness, play a central role in their artistic research and performance practice. At the same time, their work critically examines normative conceptions of what is considered “healthy” and “sick.”

Addig is mindenkinek jó egészséget kívánunk!

The clinic on Drégely Street is closing its doors once again, bringing to a close the temporary exhibition titled “Beyond Bare Life. Neglected by Institutionalized Care.”
Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the artists and experts for their participation, to the Erste Stiftung and all our supporters for their assistance, and of course to everyone for their presence and attention. 30 days / 120 hours of opening hours, 12 guided tours, 5 related programs, 22 lost patients who came in for appointments (one of whom even returned to see the exhibition), 1 burst pipe, a few dropped artworks… We’ve closed, but, the project “Beyond Bare Life” will continue this summer as part of an event in Berlin, which we’ll report on in more detail soon.

Until then, we wish everyone good health!

A puszta életen túl.

A puszta életen túl.

As part of the exhibition first accompanying program, historian Viola Lászlófi, a researcher at CEU, spoke with artist Tina Barbara and her creative partner, Harriet Wollert, about the so-called “Tripperburgs,” one of the darkest chapters in the history of the GDR. In connection with the film made for the exhibition, they discussed the operation of the institutions, the women who criticized the system and refused to conform to socialist norms, as well as the circumstances surrounding the filmmaking. Harriet, a former “patient” of the Erfurt Tripperburg, shared her personal, traumatic story — one that has affected her entire life and relationships — with the audience. At the same time, she consistently emphasized the incredibly positive outlook on life that was the most important — if not the only — condition for her survival.

Április 11-én, szombat délután négytől Nagy Edina és Lázár Eszter magyar nyelvű tárlatvezetést tartanak A puszta életen. Az intézményesített gondoskodás mellőzöttjei című kiállításon. Minden kedves érdeklődőt szeretettel várunk a programra, melynek keretében a kurátorok nemcsak a kiállított művekről, hanem a teljes Puszta életen túl kutatási prjektről is mesélnek majd.

A kiállítás útvonalai is ilyen terek mentén szerveződnek.
A címben szereplő „puszta élet” kifejezést Giorgio Agamben olasz filozófustól kölcsönöztük. Az agambeni puszta élet a biológiai élet tényét jelenti, messze a teljes fizikai, lelki és társadalmi jóléttől. A kiállítás címe a puszta életre ítéltekre utal, akiket éppen azok a társadalmi és gazdasági szektorok hagytak magukra, amelyeknek a lehető legjobb egészséget kellene biztosítaniuk számukra.
