Beyond Bare Life. Neglected by Institutionalized Care – Berlin Edition
June 26–27, 2026
venue: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berliner Medizinhistorisches Museum, Casino for Social Medicine, Berlin

Dream Sanatorium
This event draws on the socialist phenomena of the night sanatorium, a place where workers could achieve more idealised rest, as a jumping off point for reflections on contemporary sleep habits and attitudes, institutionalised and medicalised sleep, and as a space for fictionalisation, play and collaborative dreaming. Led by artist/researcher Szonja Koltay and writer/researcher Hilary White, audience members will learn about the night sanatorium, undergo a brief admissions procedure, and participate in collective dream-building experiments. While sleep is still predominantly viewed as a means of enhancing waking productivity, with the onus often on the individual to improve their own sleep, we dream of a night sanatorium valuing creativity and diversity of experience, rest which is not intent on optimisation, and a playful dream-infused dissipation of hierarchy and authority.

The installation was created as part of the "Beyond the Bare Life" exhibition in Budapest, under the title "Dream-miners spend dreamless night at the Dream Sanatorium."

“Body States 3” by HODWORKS

June 26th, 2026, Beyond Bare Life: Neglected by Institutionalized Care, @tieranatomisches_theater, @humboldt.uni Berlin

Body States 3 is the third chapter of HODWORKS’ performance series, created in dialogue with @beyond_bare_life – a long-term research and artistic project examining the ambivalences of institutionalized care. The work explores the fragile boundaries between care and control, vulnerability and self-determination, asking how bodies carry, resist, and transform systems of discipline and support.

thaqil al awwal (A Rhythmic Exoskeleton)
Audiovisual performance, 45’
18:15–19:00 - 27June at Casino for Social Medicine, Berlin

thaqil al awwal is an audio-visual performance that contemplates and experiments with an ancient 8-beat rhythmic cycle used as a clinical “dosage” to balance the stagnation of the Black Bile (Melancholy). Drawing on the 9th-century Al-Khindi’s treatise on the cosmological mapping of the humors, preserved in the Escorial, the performance restructures ancestral frequencies and the concept of the rhythmic exoskeleton to serve as a healing apparatus rather than merely an attempt to cherish antiquity’s lore. The performance proposes a sonic healing in response to the melancholic stasis inhabiting the incomprehension left by history and the remnants of defeat and grief, through gestures of ritualized rhythms, repetition, and recitation, and techniques to dispel the haunting presences.

DREAM-MINERS SPEND DREAMLESS NIGHTS AT THE DREAM SANATORIUM
Dreams buried beneath marshlands blacken over time and eventually turn to coal. The coalified dreams of our predecessors can be mined. Dream-miners, working day and night, search for these carbonized dreams hidden beneath the surface, recovering them so they may be used as a resource.
