DAM ARCHITECTURAL BOOK AWARD 2026: Take On Add Away – A transformation of the Palais des Expositions Charleroi, Ruby Press, 2026. Editors: AgwA, architecten jan de vylder inge vinck, Photos: Filip Dujardin, Form: Something Fantastic A.D.

A monument to industrial optimism—and its radical reinvention: this book tells the story of the transformation of the “Palais des Expositions” in Charleroi, Belgium. Built between 1948 and 1953 by architect Joseph André as a symbol of the nation’s progress, the vast complex fell into disuse after the decline of steel and coal. With a design approach rooted in radical sufficiency, AgwA and architecten jan de vylder inge vinck reveal the building’s inherent qualities. By removing much of the façade while preserving the floors, stairs, and roof, they transform the central hall into an open urban foyer that reconnects the structure with the city and the surrounding landscape. Featuring photographs by Filip Dujardin, who documented the process over 6 years, and detailed, color-coded drawings by the architects that distinguish between original structure, demolition, and new construction, the book renders the building’s complex transformation strikingly legible. An introduction by Ilka Ruby and Andreas Ruby and with insights from architects, engineers, developers, and city officials present the project as a powerful model for rethinking existing architecture.

Thank you to the jury for the DAM Architectural Book Award ( @architekturmuseum @petercacholaschmal ) and specifically Prof. Johanna Siebein ( @typotype_hfg_of , @studiolauckesiebein ) for composing and delivering the jury statement. Thank you also to everyone involved in the making of this project and publication: @agwa_architecture , @architectenjdviv , @filipdujardin , @ilkaruby , @andreasruby , @rubypress and first and foremost Harold Fallon ( @haroldfallon ) — in high regard and appreciation. by @andreasruby

Market Rebooted

Completed in 1929, Basel’s @markthalle_basel is dominated by an extraordinary reinforced-concrete dome designed by architect Hans Eduard Ryhiner together with engineer Alfred Adolf Goenner. Spanning 60 metres and rising around 26 metres, its shell is only about eight centimetres thick – an audacious feat of engineering that made the hall one of the largest reinforced-concrete domes of its kind when it opened.

For 75 years, the building served as Basel’s wholesale market for fruit and vegetables – a vast piece of urban infrastructure rather than the gastronomic destination it is today. When wholesale operations ceased in 2004, the future of the listed structure had to be reconsidered.

Between 2007 and 2011, Pfister Schiess Tropeano and @blaserarchitekten_basel transformed the complex. Four underground levels were constructed beneath part of the existing hall, requiring sections of the historic structure – including one of the eight supports carrying the dome – to be temporarily supported and newly founded.

The attempt to reinvent the Markthalle as a conventional shopping centre, however, proved short-lived. In 2013, a group around architect Barbara Buser – co-founder of @bauburoinsitu – pursued a radically simpler idea: make the Markthalle a market again. Food stalls, markets, cultural events, nightlife and everyday encounters gradually returned beneath the dome.

We visited the hall as part of a bicycle tour through Basel organised by @andreasruby together with our colleagues from @kuessdenfrosch_duesseldorf . A shared lunch with @barbarabuser_ gave us the chance to dive a little deeper into the story behind this transformation – and into the thinking that brought urban life back beneath the dome.

Almost a century after its completion, the spectacular concrete shell remains the protagonist. What changed is everything happening underneath it.

EVENT RECAP_SECOND LIFE_Heinze Architektour Basel x Swiss Architects

Of all the 68 books that Ilka and I have had the pleasure to publish with @rubypress_books so far, this one is especially dear to me. The project it features, the Palais des Expositions in Charleroi, could well change the course of history of architecture. It projects an entirely different understanding of architecture. One that is always temporary and never finished. It is absolutely humble and totally impressive at the same time. It is radically contemporary in a way that makes countless other buildings built today look like out of touch with the now. When I visited it for the first time, it felt less a building than the site of an archeological excavation. Walking through its unimaginable spaces will make your hairs stand on end, and give you an acute sharpness of the mind that others may find in Tibetan monasteries or in the high mountains. It is a transcendental experience, one that beautifully evaporates the limits of what architecture has been so far. At least that’s what it did for me, and I wish all of you to be able to visit it too.

It’s also a difficult building to grasp, because even finished it somehow looks like a construction site. You never quite know which parts are original, which are taken away and which are added. This puzzle is wonderful, but for those of you who would like to resolve it, we made this book. We are grateful to the architects for their lovingly thorough selection of the material - especially the production of those incredible drawings - and to @somethingfantastic_net for the beautiful graphic design. Today, Monday, 8th of June, I have the immense pleasure to present the book together with representatives of the two architecture offices who made it: architecten Jan de Vylder Inge Vinck and AgwA. If you can, you are very welcome to join us.

Hütten & Paläste in Glarus 🏚️✨
