DAM ARCHITECTURAL BOOK AWARD 2026: Take On Add Away – A transformation of the Palais des Expositions Charleroi, Ruby Press, 2026. Editors: AgwA, architecten jan de vylder inge vinck, Photos: Filip Dujardin, Form: Something Fantastic A.D. A monument to industrial optimism—and its radical reinvention: this book tells the story of the transformation of the “Palais des Expositions” in Charleroi, Belgium. Built between 1948 and 1953 by architect Joseph André as a symbol of the nation’s progress, the vast complex fell into disuse after the decline of steel and coal. With a design approach rooted in radical sufficiency, AgwA and architecten jan de vylder inge vinck reveal the building’s inherent qualities. By removing much of the façade while preserving the floors, stairs, and roof, they transform the central hall into an open urban foyer that reconnects the structure with the city and the surrounding landscape. Featuring photographs by Filip Dujardin, who documented the process over 6 years, and detailed, color-coded drawings by the architects that distinguish between original structure, demolition, and new construction, the book renders the building’s complex transformation strikingly legible. An introduction by Ilka Ruby and Andreas Ruby and with insights from architects, engineers, developers, and city officials present the project as a powerful model for rethinking existing architecture. Thank you to the jury for the DAM Architectural Book Award ( @architekturmuseum @petercacholaschmal ) and specifically Prof. Johanna Siebein ( @typotype_hfg_of , @studiolauckesiebein ) for composing and delivering the jury statement. Thank you also to everyone involved in the making of this project and publication: @agwa_architecture , @architectenjdviv , @filipdujardin , @ilkaruby , @andreasruby , @rubypress and first and foremost Harold Fallon ( @haroldfallon ) — in high regard and appreciation. by @rubypress_books

Architecture of defense is justified through the promise of security. Yet it also produces new exclusions, dependencies, and forms of control—while remaining largely outside architectural debate. What is concealed behind the apparent neutrality of prevention and risk management? And who defines the risks and priorities that shape this architecture? Border–Land–Scapes brings questions of defense, geopolitics, and territorial transformation back to the center of architectural debate. #rubypress publication no. 68: 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 – 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝑰𝒕 𝑼𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒔, edited by Elena Schütz, Julian Schubert, Leonard Streich, in collaboration mit Sarah Scherzer and Eva Erny Developed with students at UdK Berlin over two semesters, the book combines design work, interviews, and graphic analysis in two parts: The first part, 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐈𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬, investigates the mechanisms that lead to imbalances in housing distribution and describes the status quo through graphics and case studies. From this emerges the call for more flexible — and thus more sustainably usable — housing models. The second part introduces the concept of 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 and presents architectural strategies that organize housing as a process shaped by shifting needs, social constellations, and temporal rhythms. Through design projects set in various urban contexts, it demonstrates how permeable spatial structures can be established to enable appropriation, adaptation, and collective use. The concept of constellations housing challenges the rigid assignments of rooms within apartments as well as the fixed boundaries between them, proposing instead flexible, permeable spatial structures. Rooms are no longer clearly allocated to individual units but can be used and combined in different ways regardless of their location. The result is a dynamic housing model that adapts to changing life situations and enables diverse forms of living together — from the nuclear family to intergenerational shared housing. We often think of borders as abstract lines. Yet they are physical: designed, constructed, inhabited, and experienced. If design is never neutral, what responsibilities do architects carry in a remilitarizing world? Can architecture afford to remain outside this conversation? Bringing together architects, theorists, and researchers, Border–Land–Scapes examines the relationship between architecture, geopolitics, and the landscapes they shape. #rubypress publication no. 67: 𝑨 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒖𝒕𝒔 – 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, by Marc Angélil and Cary Siress. Situated at the nexus of scholarship and activism, A Thousand Cuts: Architectures of Displacement unpacks entrenched entanglements between illegalized migration and environment-making practices. The architects Marc Angélil and Cary Siress examine one of the most vicious contemporary challenges shaping the production of space across the globe, exploring the material regimes that keep displaced populations at bay and identifying potential sites of struggle to resist the constituent dynamics that sustain divisions. #rubypress publication no. 67: 𝑨 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒖𝒕𝒔 – 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, by Marc Angélil and Cary Siress. By June 2025, 117.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced—twice as many as a decade ago, according to UNHCR. Through case studies from global hotspots of forced migration, Angélil and Siress examine the material Regimes that keep displaced Population at bay. Border walls, militarized zones, detention and deportation systems, restrictive legislation, digital surveillance, and even buses become instruments through which the right to move and resettle is systematically denied. These architectures of separation no longer mark only the divide between a developed North and a Global South; they increasingly shape territories and cities across the globe. Rather than stopping at critique, the book asks what architecture can do otherwise. It exposes the discipline’s entanglement with systems of power while reclaiming its capacity to imagine and support infrastructures of care, solidarity, and mobility—from inclusive refugee settlements and legal assistance to climate justice and forms of collective resistance.
