Shooting a music video on the Fujifilm X100VI: A chat with André Badenhorst

📣 What surprised you most about videography with the X100VI?
Without a doubt, the image quality. For such a small camera, it honestly blew my mind. It’s an APS-C sensor, so you naturally expect certain limitations, but the amount of dynamic range I got out of it was incredible. That was probably the biggest surprise for me.

The built-in four-stop ND filter was another one. I honestly can’t think of another camera this size with built-in NDs. It sounds like such a small thing, but when you’re running around on a shoot by yourself, it makes a massive difference. You just keep shooting instead of stopping to mess around with filters.

The autofocus also surprised me. I made the decision to shoot the whole music video using autofocus. I was a little bit wary of it at first, but if it didn’t work, I would’ve switched back to manual.

The funny thing is, I never had to. The autofocus was fantastic. Even on the few occasions where it missed focus, it never looked ugly. It didn’t hunt all over the place. It almost looked like a gentle focus pull, and for the documentary feel of the music video, I actually liked it. It felt natural.

Then there’s Fujifilm’s colour science. I’ve been shooting Fujifilm for over nine years now, so I know the Film Simulations inside out. I didn’t feel the need to shoot Log and figure everything out later. I knew I could bake the look in and know exactly what I was getting on the day.

For this project I shot on ACROS with the Red filter, which is my favourite black-and-white look. I also expose black and white a little differently. I normally underexpose slightly because I like the mood it creates, and ACROS just gives me exactly the look I’m after.

Another studio test 🎥

This time we worked with the @nisi_south_africa Athena 85mm,135mm.
Paired with the Final Boss @fujifilm_sa ETERNA 55.

Because both lenses are designed for 35mm coverage, the ETERNA 55 has a much larger sensor, so we do get some vignetting. This wasn’t a deal breaker for me though. Definitely a give and take type of decision that you make when choosing this kit.

One of my favourite things about this test was seeing how the focal lengths translate on the larger sensor. The 85mm reads closer to a 55mm, while the 135mm comes in around a 90mm. Which I thought was amazing and introduced such interesting fall off on the images.

Spent yesterday filming Sox being Sox in @studioaether.za

I followed him around with the @fujifilm_sa GFX ETERNA 55 and the new @nisi_south_africa 65 LF PRIME 16mm.

I’ll be honest… I never shoot this wide. Most of the time 24mm is as wide as I’ll go, so I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did.

This lens is just insane.

The thing that really stood out wasn’t just how wide it is, it just feels really natural. It’s a rectilinear design, which means your straight lines stay straight instead of bending like you’d normally expect from an ultra-wide. Even at roughly a 13mm full-frame equivalent on the ETERNA, it never felt gimmicky or distracting.

What’s also really exciting is that this is currently the only lens in NiSi’s new 65 PRIME Large Format range. From what I’ve heard, this is just the beginning, with more focal lengths on the way. On the ETERNA it’s a perfect match. No vignetting at all it was designed for sensors this size.

One more thing… I almost never shoot black and white, but the ETERNA has somehow got me shooting black and white again, and I’m loving it. There’s no grade on this video at all. It’s straight out of camera using ACROS.

I honestly never thought I’d say this, but this lens has me wanting to shoot wider more often. That’s saying a lot from someone who usually stops at 24mm.

Really looking forward to getting this combo out on a proper shoot.
