“Mirrors of the Earth”
84 × 96 × 9 in
Reflective stainless steel, concrete, stone
Installed at Duncan Neighborhood Park, Austin, TX

“Mirrors of the Earth” is a ground-embedded public artwork that appears as a permanent puddle, rendered in mirror-polished stainless steel. Inspired by water, the piece captures a fleeting moment in time, the calm after a storm, when reflective pools briefly gather before disappearing back into the ground.

The sculpture blurs the boundary between object and atmosphere, forming an ever-changing field of reflection shaped by light, sky, and those who pass through it.

Humanity’s relationship to water is at a critical threshold. In a region increasingly defined by cycles of drought and flood, this “permanent” puddle becomes a quiet contradiction. It holds the image of water in a place where water cannot remain. What appears stable is, in reality, ephemeral. What feels abundant is increasingly scarce.

The calm after the storm begins to mirror the quiet before the next. In this suspended moment, the piece offers both reflection and warning: a surface that holds memory, and a future that remains unsettled.

Thank you to @cityofaustinarts, @austinhistory, @briannabybrianna and the Downtown Austin community whose experiences and insight assisted me in shaping this work. taken in Austin, Texas by @andrefuqua_

Get to know Occupy Vacancy, a local public art initiative included in Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time.

Occupy Vacancy is a public art initiative co-founded by St. Louis–born artists Brianna McIntyre and André Fuqua. Grounded in human-centered community development, the project reshapes the physical landscape of St. Louis City by transforming vacant, city-owned lots into vibrant third places for neighborhood-specific public art. Through sculpture and spatial design, Occupy Vacancy responds to the layered histories of race, architecture, and legacy that shape St. Louis’s Northside.

Brianna McIntyre @briannabybrianna is a visual and installation artist, interior architect, furniture designer, and Creative Director of Occupy Vacancy. Her practice engages narratives related to place and home, invisible women-centered labor, race, and the politicized performance of beauty imposed on Black women.

André Fuqua @andrefuqua_ is an interdisciplinary artist and Design Engineer of Occupy Vacancy. Trained as a civil engineer and materials scientist, his work bridges sculpture and infrastructure, examining how visibility shapes power and perspective within both natural and built environments.

Occupy Vacancy’s commission is curated by Executive + Artistic Director James McAnally @jamesxmcanally and Assistant Curator Charlie Farrell @artfullythought

@counterpublic brings Coyote Time to St. Louis this fall. Experience our Triennial exhibition from September 12–December 12, 2026.

I am elated to officially announce my selection as a Corridor Construction Artist for @cityofaustinarts Art in Public Places.

The past year has been enriched with deep site survey, community engagement, archives research, and studies with sun and soil.

I will be installing a permanent public artwork that addresses the history and changing landscape of Duncan Neighborhood Park and surrounding Downtown Austin. This is my largest commission to date and I feel gratitude to be able to speak in this way.

This season of life has been a season of saying no to self, and yes to self.

My word for 2024 is audacity.

Do you have the audacity to shape shift?

Do you have the audacity to take the chance, vibrate freer, love harder?

Faith over rules.
