thanks to @shamirathefirst & @criticalminded_community for inviting me to contribute to this collection of brilliant minds. i wrote about my new path&freedom as an indie writer, &why its important for journalism to exist outside the claws of compromised institutions

the timing is something. i wrote this during a period where i was feeling really invigorated about my path as a journalist. now, the waters are choppier. seeing these words again is clarifying, though. &im proud they came out in a journal with some of my favorite culture writers in the world.

i dont know if im gonna write at length about this, but my main takeaway was that the two nights i went to were a celebration of craft. he’s obviously ran it up financially, but i dont think many of the rappers aspiring to be the “next jay-z” realize that at the root of his empire is his “pen” &his allegiance to his craft. many of them just wanna skip to the wealthy part. i think people got fooled by the “im not a rapper” stuff…yeah right. pretty much anyone i can think of that vies for GOAT status is a maniacal rap nerd, him included

“jayz30” isn’t quite the full story, because he was honing his pen &his skills for almost a decade before reasonable doubt; irv gotti talked about being with jay-z & jaz-o in london in ‘88.

he raps about developing his craft at his kitchen table, about being rejected, but believing in himself &his craft so much that it didnt deter him. he reminded us at multiple junctures of the shows that the core of his artistry is sharing his feelings &hoping the world resonates too; obviously we have.

30+ years later, we see the results of that determination &dedication. i went for two nights &theyre two of the best shows ive ever been to, along with roots picnic 🙌🏿 ok i may write something bc i have more to say 😅 by @andrejgee

got two pieces in The Fall-Off, including one on the cover 🙌🏿 grateful to be among the group of writers selected to contribute to this collection. years from now this will be a strong display of who was movin &shakin with the pen.

there’s so much hoopla about the downfall of rap editorial &print media, but it just takes the right people to feel otherwise &provide opportunities. nothing’s over til it’s over, especially a craft being held up by too many passionate, insightful, talented people to name.

it also takes readers to support the work &let others know its a worthwhile endeavor.

shoutout to @realcoleworld, @feltonamus for being a point-person on the project, &@bonsudreamz for being an attentive editor. congrats @timmhotep for crafting the cover story.
