Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour shows how wealthy gatekeepers punish artists who speak up for Palestine, while others stay silent to protect their careers.

🚨🚨🚨Trigger warning: long ass caption šŸ˜…

At the beginning of the year, I had made a personal resolution to build a life that allows me to tell the stories that matter to me. So when @criticalminded_community approached me with an opportunity to work on the Liner Notes project, I jumped at the idea.

The value seemed obvious: if critics of color feel like they cannot get paid a competitive rate to talk about topics that matter to them, we should offer a chance to do just that. And so we immediately got to work, reaching out to a vast collective of writers and thinkers across generations and experiences to talk about the nuanced and sticky parts of music journalism that rarely make it on the page, and the realities of what it means to love an industry that is slowly crushing the life out of you. In a pleasant surprise, almost everyone we reached out to was eager to be involved. I truly believe that what we developed is an essential artifact that not only examines the reality of music media at present, but looks back at the lessons of the past as we work to create a more sustainable future for arts writing.

None of this was done alone: the project itself wouldn’t have had anywhere to go without the work of Sharon Mizota, @soulsides , and @nonstopdiscopowerpack , whose work on the truly breakthrough research report, ā€œBeautiful Struggles,ā€ serves as an anchor that threads through most of the conversations. Creative director, illustrator, and all-around superstar @arshraziuddin immediately saw the vision and helped develop a beautiful visual language to bring all of this labor to life. The inimitable @atoosamoinzadeh ’s rigorous commitment to copy edit and fact checking made sure that we published the very best versions of our stories.

Then there’s the writing. I am immensely critical of my own work, but I will never hesitate to sing praises on my peers and colleagues. To @clovito @_slangdoctor @ivie.ani @andrejgee @sid_madden @honeyshot @eenaffets @timmhotep - thank you thank you thank you!

Much more to come, but thank you to everyone involved in bringing this to life. We are only just getting started ✨

Mike Shabb « Sewaside IVĀ Ā» lyrics now available on @genius — swipe for some knowledge!

A media personality stands adjacent to a journalist, but not always parallel. All journalists are not writers and vice versa. While a recording device may be necessary to conduct an interview for public consumption, the quality of that interview rests on the depth of curiosity and research prior to any mic being powered on. A personality’s talent may shine in their ability to converse and ask questions, but taking the clay that is their Q&A and building a new experience or world with their pen is an entirely different skill set. For that very reason, on behalf of Culture Is Currency, I must throw flowers toward every single craftsman (ā€œ2 way playerā€) who contributed beautiful ideas, insight and prose to @thefalloff26 coffee table magazine. The consortium of brilliance has conjured a visceral effect in whomever held the issue in hand for the first time. Get yourz and see what I mean. www.thefalloff.com
