VACATION.
Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. -The Beatles
Never, & I mean never, did I think I’d wind up vacationing in the Berkshires: singing, healing, resting, & tuning. No redeye to a circuit party in Europe, no dance festival in SF, no morning flight to see Dream. Simple, present, holy… weird.

I found myself in an academy of seekers, sonically seeking to own, love, & respect their voice. After a decade of Broadway shows, the best music education money can buy, & industry connections, these simple intentions were lost & squandered. Could they possibly be ready to be recovered?

In this Hindu-enlightened space, facilitated by a sea of kind Karens, & mentored by intentional Aussie bros, this chocolate drop reconnected with Grandma Mary & tuned in with Pastor Lucille Jackson. My queens spoke words of wisdom. Miraculously, I let it be. The result: a clearer path forward, more love 4 authentic sound, & more reverence 4 others’ sounds.

I hate to say it, but this place still feels slightly wacky to me personally, & the optics require a godly amount of acceptance to rationalize when in ego. But God’s power here is undeniable. Maybe it’s the presence of the native Mohegan people, or the forgiveness of the 500-million-year-old Appalachians. I felt privileged to sonically wade in these waters.

Whatever the truth, this couldn’t have been the reality 4 my Grandma Mary 70 years ago. She sewed 4 the likes of people here. I hope she received this sonic shift. I pray the collective continues to tune towards harmony. I felt the grace. I needed the grace. I still need the grace.

*Yesterday, I got a “What are you wearing?” after sporting a hot pink bra on the hottest day in New York. Immediately triggered, I felt small, alone, & the need to change—& change I did. I changed my mindset, my fierce always-ready attack mode, my heart on the matter, & the amount of empathy I hold for that person & myself. Do I think wearing this bra is unholy, overtly sexual, or dictates my budding views on truly accepting my sexuality? The resounding answer to that question is no. I am queer, I am non-binary. Truth be told, I don’t know who I am becoming, & welcoming God into that space is the only thing I have pride in at this current juncture.
*So what am I wearing? Firstly, more pounds around the midsection. The 28-inch waist is absolutely a soft 31. I hate it, but I am welcoming it. I am wearing more joy. I am wearing more respect for myself & others. I am holding myself accountable for my actions & holding others accountable for theirs. I am wearing art for me & making sure it serves me first & foremost. I am wearing less ego—damn, that shit is freeing. Give it a shot. I am wearing an older face; my face card still doesn’t decline, but it’s giving mature. I am wearing healthier family connections, supportive friend circles, & my mentor’s wisdom. What I’m not wearing is toxic talk—well, not exactly, but I am wearing it less & less. Toxic talk hurts. You’re clearly hurt if that’s all you can communicate with. Blessings.
*I am wearing my flaws. I am wearing less money. I am wearing my God-given talents. I am wearing “I don’t get sex at this age.” I am wearing community, forgiveness, & God’s grace. I am wearing being an uncle. I am wearing old patterns less. So yes, I’m wearing a faggoty hot pink bra, feeling kinda weird about it honestly, but acceptance of all the emotions that come along with it. I am wearing pride, maybe for the first time in my life. I’m grateful for this. taken in Williamsburg by @andrew_arrington

A BLACK WOMAN’S WORTH.
…I’m game to find out, because this one thing I know: Black women are unicorns; they are miracles. They have more faith than ten men put together. I don’t know why God has blessed me 2 be steeped in their collective wisdom, strength, pain, acceptance, and joy. I know that faith in so many. I felt it in Kamala. Joy throughout. Peace throughout. Big Faith throughout.

A good friend said yesterday, “I want what I want. When I wanted something different, I got different.” Well, I’m grateful I want you in my life (maybe only for four days for now, but still). I want to process the complexity of your narrative, as it most certainly impacts mine. As I continue to sort through the roots and thorny ground of our history, Im beginning to only see the roses. I’m grateful to acknowledge that I am a part of a class of faith that gets more stuff done in 100 days than some do in a whole lifetime. I’m grateful that I want Black women in my life (Black men, I’m working on it. I promise).

I’m grateful to begin to want different, to have acted different, and in that space, I’m just beginning to see the superpower of which you queens are made- that of which i am made. I pray we stay on the same team, and continue to act out of Big Faith, not Fear. I pray we continue 2 not go back. Happy birthday, Vickie. by @andrew_arrington

Intimate Humanity.

In a Grindr gay culture hell-bent on dismissing humanity in favor of fantasy and choosing escape over intimacy, Najee Omar’s work, the little Black Book, schooled me in more ways than one. His work in progress, supported by the multihyphenated cultural collective HiARts, radiates black queer joy throughout. The protagonist’s questioning of himself in relation to love is a tale as old as time, echoing Issa’s Insecure, Sondheim’s Company, Strange Loop, and For Colored Girls.

However, this unapologetically black queer artist does something quite unique. This play is birthed out of his personal experiences processed in a journal, a little black book of sorts. This pun, however, isn’t binary. In being intimate in the way he honestly processes the souls who share his bed, from the jump, he gives himself & his lovers the respect any human is due. Whether or not the love lasted, this energy is fleshed out through a black queer prose spectacle, a language Najee expresses with legendary function and imagery.

Unlike Grindr, This little black book becomes a metaphor ultimately for intimacy within the black queer collective. By artistically elevating his world, his family, friends, and fellow artists can imagine reclaiming their own intimate and most humane parts.

As I attempt to reclaim and evolve parts of my black queer sexuality, your poetic intamate approach gives me much hope in my process. Thank you, Najee. Thank you, Actors. Thank you, HiArts. Top-notch Black Queer Joy. taken in Hi-ARTS by @andrew_arrington
