Summer 25’

Hands down one of the best summers ever!! Who would’ve thought that the mountains would bring so much joy and peace into my life. Thank you Cherokee and everyone involved in Unto These Hills for making this such a magical experience. Thank you for helping me find myself, my happiness, and my inner child again. I will forever be grateful to have been given this opportunity!

“DON’T DROP THE LITTLE BOY!!” ~ Tommi Galaska

During my last semester of college, I had the honor of being able to work with Tommi one last time. St Marks Place will forever hold a special place in my heart. It meant the world to me to have been given the chance to not only be apart of this piece, but to also have the opportunity to have a solo. This solo pushed me in ways that I had never been pushed before and while it was hard, it was very rewarding. Without further ado, this is the solo from St Marks Place!!

“Do The Voices Scorn You?”

This body of work is one that I will always cherish and hold dear. It has profoundly transformed me—shaping my process, my way of thinking, and my approach to choreography. When I first embarked on this project, I was apprehensive about how it would be received, not only by the general public but also by my peers, due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter. However, I was determined to make it distinct from my previous works, which meant stepping away from the tendency to create pieces that were personally driven. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, one focused on research-based choreography. Initially, it was difficult to trust myself and feel confident in the movements I was creating. Thankfully, I had the support of those around me who encouraged me to trust the process, even when it felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable. This advice helped me not only build confidence in my own decisions but also in my dancers. It allowed me to give them creative freedom, which in turn enriched the work. I am incredibly proud of this project, and it’s surreal to reflect on the fact that it marks my final choreographic endeavor at ECU.

TO MY CAST:
Each of you means so much to me, and I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the immense effort, dedication, and passion you poured into bringing this complex piece to life. Even when I asked you to step out of your comfort zones and take on challenges that felt unfamiliar or uncomfortable, you responded with unwavering commitment and enthusiasm. Each of you brought something unique to the table, whether it was a new perspective, a creative idea, or a sense of trust in the process. Along the way, you not only helped me discover new approaches but also taught me invaluable lessons that I will carry forward in my own growth as an artist. Words truly cannot capture the depth of my gratitude, nor how much I admire and appreciate each of you. I am excited to see where your paths lead and cannot wait to witness the incredible accomplishments and contributions you will undoubtedly make in the future. taken in East Carolina University by @andrew_joyner_

“Do The Voices Scorn You?”

“Do The Voices Scorn You?” Encompasses how the world envisions schizophrenia, while simultaneously exploring the three different stages (Prodromal, Active, and Residual) one may experience with this condition. It sheds light onto these people in hopes of making others understand that everyone is human at heart. Not only does it humanize these conditions, it also provokes the question of “Do these people get the help they deserve?” It allows the audience to ponder on how they view these people and if the disorder being displayed is as bad as one might think. This work is all about the uncomfortable extremes within this scenario and how when it is taken to the max, it can get no worse than what is being presented. This piece ultimately invites the viewer to reconsider their preconceived notions they have about not only schizophrenic disorder, but mental health as a whole.

Choreography: Andrew Joyner and Dancers

Dancers: Maggie Gragg, Adrian Jones, Sherri McLean, Makayla Micheo, Sarah Parks, Emma Sisti, Lexi Sonnendecker, Alexia Tormey, Reese White

Understudies: Hayden Baugh, Shelby Evans, Lola Fleming
