POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
At the heart of whatever I have always loved has been writing. Songs. Articles. Books. Interview shows and podcasts. A documentary. And for quite some time friends and family and followers have asked if there is a more consistent place where I published writings that they can support outside of the occasional book or record or new series. And I have always replied with a gentle, “No.” But as if today my reply is a gentle “Yes.” I will begin publishing weekly writings delivered straight to your inbox, if you choose, on my new Substack.

You can read my first entry and subscribe for free below. Or, if you want a few of the extras or just an easy way to support, there is a monthly or even an annual subscription. This is a way I can now give an option of support to you and to keep my writing muscle in shape. (And hopefully growing!)

I just rediscovered my childhood at CCM Magazine.

My first cassette tape was “The Friendship Company” by Sandi Patty. One song also featured this guy, Gerbert. (Who remembers?) None of the kids wanted to play with him. They made fun of him being different. Well, he shared that with Sandi and she assured him that not only did she love him, God loved him … and liked him, too! She told Gerbert he was “a masterpiece.” Hearing that song at 6-years old sure was a good start to believing that might be true as the dog days of living took their toll on my self-esteem later on, as life is bound to do.

As for CCM, this historic magazine published my writings for real for the first time when I was in college in Nashville. A few years later, the fine folks there gave me my chance at trying out film—of producing, directing, interviewing on camera—when they asked me to write and host a series of interviews for their cover artists. The first cover artist I filmed with? You guessed it, Sandi. The next one? Mark Lowry. And thus, Dinner Conversations was born. If not for the opportunities CCM gave me in the early days, I may have never gone on to publish books, record podcasts, write films, interview United States history! All of it.

As for Sandi, she has given me various opportunities over the years. In music. In interviewing. The opportunity to direct the music video for her new song this year — “The Voice I Have Now.” It’s a docu-style video about her return to recording at 70. I’m so proud of how it all came out. I’d love for you to look that up on YouTube. (And if you’re a Grammy voter, ‘tis the season if you’d like to vote for the song in the Best Contemporary Christian Song category.)

It’s hard to know where our paths will lead. How it will all happen. But thanks to the kindness of Sandi, thanks to the vulnerability of Gerbert, thanks to the openness of CCM, I have been reminded we are all masterpieces with unique God-gifted purposes to live out and live into. #ccmmag #sandipatty #gerbert ! taken in Franklin, Tennessee by @andrewbgreer

“Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” We’re all finding our way in the dark. Not sure of the outcome but with hearts full of hope and hands wide open to the hunch in our spirits—that we are created on purpose, with purpose, out of an unending supply of Love.

I am a Christian in that I attempt to live whatever days I’m given in this life in following the example of Jesus. And those footsteps just keep leading back to love. To loving each other with no conditions.

Part of loving each other is hearing each out. One way I do this is in participating in @thecartercenter’s Service of Prayer for Our Nation. (This video clip is from a service of prayer earlier this year.) This Thursday night in Atlanta I’ll be sharing in song. And faith leaders from around the country will be dialoguing as a part of the night. And together we hope to provide some response to the big question: How can people of faith uplift our shared humanity and guide us to disagree better in these challenging times?

Join us Thursday in Atlanta:

This little spitfire. Patsy Clairmont and I became unexpected but fast friends many years ago while living in Nashville. (We even survived working together!) We’re built from the same cloth, just a few years apart.

I live in Georgia now. But special nights like last night, celebrating our friend Sandi at the Opry, give us the good excuse to occupy the same room at the same time. It’s a bit mysterious how we get put together with our people. Glad Patsy and the whole Clairmont clan are some of mine. taken in Grand Ole Opry by @andrewbgreer

It’s that time of year. A nip in the breeze. Candy corn. (I repeat: candy corn.) The trees shifting their color palette as they sigh into Autumn’s temperatures, signaling their boughs to close shop for the winter. Everything heads back home. Go out for the morning and you might need a light jacket. Sit on the porch with a good book and you might need a blanket.

Speaking of reading, October is the month where I get a bit sparky over spooky and crack open a new-to-me Stephen King tome. (This is not an invitation to discuss or debate the threat reading King poses to my psychosis or sanity. It’s one novel a year. Everything in moderation, folks.)

I typically purchase my annual copy from a local used bookstore on some credit I accrued from trading in books I long ago read and long ago ran out of space to store. But I would sleep on books if I could. I love books. I love the smell of the pages. The feel of the binding as it un-creases in my palm. The fonts. The titles. After music, words, especially words printed on a page, have been my greatest love affair.

All the stories in books. Not just within the outline of the tale that is published on the pages, but the layers of lives embedded beneath the ink. The author. The editor. The publisher. The printing press. The reader. All the traumas and triumphs of our very real and very human lives influencing and fashioning and culturing every yarn ever spun.

And then books get passed down, from generation to generation, over decades, even hundreds of years. With all those pieces of us within those pages. All the mystery of all of us that remains here—that lives here—long after our physical bodies have been laid 6-feet under the ground or scattered to the wind.

You see, I believe in ghosts …

My sweet mother playing a Christmas anthem I co-wrote with the great songwriter and good man Tony Wood. My heart is full!

Her choir from the church I grew up in Azle is singing “Tonight” in their Christmas program in December. And Dad and Mom are singing with them. Total bucket list. Thanks J.K. and Ash Creek for including it. And thanks Tony. And thank YOU, Mom, for introducing me to the friendship of music.

Your choir can sing “Tonight,” too! Order it here: https://semsenmusic.com/shop/tonight/ taken in Azle, Texas by @andrewbgreer

How appropriate to swing by the publisher’s office to pick up copies of the fresh new, gently revised softcover edition of “More Than a President: Sundays with Jimmy Carter” releasing today—on the birthday of the book’s subject, this man of peace, President Carter. Today marks 102 years of his presence in this world. I suggest we are all the better for it.

This new edition features study questions derived from each of his lessons included. Available everywhere books are sold. Or you can get these first 6 copies the publisher gave me today, signed, numbered, and dated with today’s date, President Carter’s birthday—plus some vintage Carter extras—by clicking the “Order Now” button at SundaysWithJimmyCarter.com. My mother has ministered at Ash Creek Baptist Church as organist for 43 years. She has played the organ in churches going back to her high school years. I’m pretty sure she carried each of my brothers and me while playing the organ. The other day, she was counting the years she has played, and the tally was over 50 years. Music has been a mainstay in her life, and as a result music has been gifted to so many of our lives who have been around her through the years. Today is her last day on the bench, though her music and involvement in music will always remain.

If you’ve ever been impacted by my mom’s gift of music, say so! And for those around Azle, come and celebrate her. 6:00-7:00p tonight in the fellowship hall at her home church: Ash Creek Baptist Church, 300 S. Stewart Street, Azle, TX 76020. I’m sure there will be cake! taken in Ash Creek Baptist Church by @andrewbgreer

There are quiet moments in Plains. But never dull ones. Especially this week. I was really happy to be the producer on the ground for the upcoming Norwegian docuseries “My Cousin Jimmy.” Such kind fellas from our neighbors in Norway filming in Plains and sharing in the heart of this place this week. (Thank you, Magnus.) You all are always welcome here.

All kinds of other fruitful things squeezed in. The honor of sharing the mic with my dear friend Kim. James, a good man and friend, willingly joined in to add his own unique insights on the spirit of his grandfather. Top it off with new and old CPIC friends (Thanks for including me Michael, George and Jan), the coffeeshop wall that inspired “Theo of Golden,” and Peanut Festivaling.

Plains is so uniquely Plains. It’s always connecting us with friends from all over the world. That’s a good feeling. As one of my neighbors once said to me, “We’re all just cousins.” Family! #mycousinjimmy #plainsga by @andrewbgreer
