Some moments aren’t meant to stay behind studio doors. ✨

In April, @andrewcasto shared the unique process behind his richly textured ceramic works—offering audiences a rare look into his creative techniques!

Creating connections and expanding access to contemporary art experiences remains at the heart of Tephra ICA’s mission, and this program was a beautiful reminder of the power of gathering through art. Thank you, Reston Community Center, for opening up your studio space!

Casto’s recent work—whose formal language is based on a material study of geological processes translated into ceramic and mixed-media vessel forms—explores the connection between “macrocosmic” environmental change and interruptions in our often routine existence.

✨ Join us for a Ceramics Demo with Andrew Casto on April 11! Registration required ✨

✨ Faculty Feature: Andrew Casto
Professor, Ceramics
Director, School of Art & Art History, University of Iowa
@andrewcasto

We’re honored to feature Andrew Casto, a cornerstone of our community—an internationally recognized artist, a generous mentor, and a guiding force in our department.

Andrew has exhibited his work across the globe—including in Spain, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and many more—and has participated in over 90 group and solo exhibitions. He was a former long-term resident at the Archie Bray Foundation, was a recipient of a 2015 Emerging Artist award by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), and a finalist for the prestigious Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize in London.

His sculptural works reflect the tension between natural forces and emotional weight—channeling the raw power of geologic transformation into dynamic ceramic and mixed media forms. His art asks 'how do the pressures of life leave their mark on us?' And in doing so, he invites us to discover the sublime in our everyday disruptions.

Here in the Universe of Iowa, Andrew is more than just a faculty member—he’s a magnetic presence: humble, thoughtful, and fiercely dedicated. His leadership embraces the department and school like the strong yet sensitive energy in his work.

We asked Andrew to share what he finds most meaningful about our community at UIowa :

Andrew shared →

"I feel incredibly fortunate and privileged to be the Director of the School of Art, Art, History, and Design, and to have had the opportunity to lead the Ceramics Area in the  nine years before this one. The history, faculty, and students of the School, both in ceramics and at large, is among the most prolific of US art institutions, and it’s been an honor to be trusted with the care and leadership of this community. I’ve worked with incredible students and colleagues, and made life long friends here, and I love sharing this place with the world. We have many exciting things in the works as we shape the future of the School, and we’re excited to welcome our next cohort of students here in Iowa City. There’s truly nowhere I’d rather teach and make art than this place." taken in University of Iowa, Visual Arts Building by @andrewcasto

This fall and winter have been an adventure in my new role as Director of @uiowaart, and I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by excellent supportive colleagues and students. Somehow still managing to find time to put things together for a two person show with @janetlorenhill at @tephra_ica in Virginia this March. I’m grateful for the help of @mindysolomongallery in prep for this as always. taken in Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art by @andrewcasto
