"The formal language present in this analysis is based on a material study of geologic processes translated into ceramic and mixed media objects, often referencing historical vessel form. I seek a purposeful link between macrocosmic environmental change, and interruptions in our otherwise routine existence." - Andrew Casto

It is always hard to say goodbye. 🥺

Kayla @weinman_ceramics and Melodie @melodiemehndi gave us such wonderful memories and shared so much insight with our community throughout this CIRCA graduate exchange residency. They even took the time to teach our Ceramics 1 students and share their incredible knowledge!

We had such a wonderful time having you both here. Wishing you the absolute best with the rest of your grad school journey! @unl_clay @uarkceramics
Safe travels back, and see you both again soon! ✨

Very first piece I made in the new studio - Still surprised by the fact that 1/3 of the semester is already gone. 😳

Continuing our CIRCA Visiting Artist series, please give a warm welcome to Melodie Sidhu @melodiemehndi , joining us from the University of Arkansas! @uarkceramics ✨

Melodie is one of two visiting graduate artists working in our studios this semester through CIRCA (Consortium for Intercollegiate Research in the Ceramic Arts). Through this reciprocal exchange network connecting six major research universities, two of our own UIowa graduate students are currently in residence at partner institutions, while we have the distinct privilege of hosting two talented artists right here in Iowa City.

Collaborative initiatives like CIRCA expand our creative horizons, bridge studio communities, and cultivate vital peer-to-peer dialogues across top ceramic programs. We couldn’t be more excited for the energy and conversations Melodie brings to our department!

Melodie’s rich studio practice navigates identity, diaspora, and cultural memory. Drawing deep inspiration from the intricate craftsmanship of textiles, architecture, and ceremonial objects from India, she channels her background in henna into clay—infusing her surfaces with striking rhythm, delicate fluidity, and meticulous linework.

Please make sure to say hello and give Melodie a warm Hawkeye welcome when you see her around the studios! 👋

Welcome to Iowa, Melodie! 🌽💛🖤
