Music / photos of rocks & animals (new album AIRD is out now).
'Extraordinary, outstanding.' Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music.

A Billion Stones, from my new AIRD album, was on @bbc6music yesterday. I'm very grateful to @gideoncoe (guest presenting Guy Garvey's Finest Hour) whose support of my music over the years has meant a lot to me. It was thrilling to be played right before April 5th by Talk Talk which was a formative influence on my writing, AND I'm especially pleased that Gideon chose A Billion Stones, which was the first song I'd recorded at home since I was a teenager and the first new thing I'd written after well over a year of writer's block. Hearing @hamishbrownmusic's mix of this song was what convinced me I might have another album in me after all.

Anyway, here's a trailer for AIRD - available on most streaming and downloading services now! - featuring A Billion Stones. SOUND ON. by @andreweatonlewis

The music for AIRD's opening track was inspired by the intensity of Hebridean weather, so it feels fitting that that there are 60mph winds outside on the day it's released. Here's a new trailer, filmed yesterday on the cliff above the village and soundtracked by Everyone is Here (thanks to @hamishbrownmusic for making the song sound EPIC). SOUND ON.

Islanders, please come to the album launch at @anlanntair on Wednesday 25 March. Tickets include a digital download of the album.
OR you can pre-order AIRD now from Bandcamp and get Prospect Cottage, the song in this trailer, straight away.

Thanks again to @hamishbrownmusic for his brilliant production work on this music.

An Avebury Journey is a beautiful film by my artist neighbour Jill Smith. On Thursday night this week - rescheduled due to Hebridean weather - we're screening it at The Edge Cafe in Aird Uig with music by me and @ralphtonge.

An Avebury Journey was filmed in 1982/1983 but was shown in public for the first time ever last month at @anlanntair. It's a fascinating historical document, marking the beginning of a new creative phase in Jill's life that ultimately led to her Zodiac Journey project for the @fruitmarketgallery in Edinburgh in 2023 and 2024.

All welcome at our clifftop cinema. Entry is free. by @andreweatonlewis

NEWS. With support from @creativescots, @ralphtonge and I have just started working on a photography and music project about the Hebridean village of Aird Uig, an amazing, unique place that has been an inspiration to both of us for a long time now.

There will be an exhibition at @anlanntair in 2027, accompanied by new music (live and recorded).

Thanks so much to Creative Scotland for funding this project. It's the first time either of us has applied to CS as artists and we're excited to be working with each other, and with the community of Aird Uig, to bring this to life.

Follow us both for updates over the next few months... by @andreweatonlewis

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. In memory of Beldina Odenyo, an incredible human being and artist who we lost to suicide in 2021, I would love for as many people as possible to:

1. watch @belthemovie, Louise Lockwood's beautiful film about Beldina (***** The Guardian) which is now on BBC iPlayer.

2. vote for Heir of the Cursed to win @sayaward before public voting closes on Monday.

Bel sang at the Scottish Album of the Year Awards in 2021, in what seemed like a career-making performance to pretty much everyone who saw it. She died just two weeks later.

In the years since, Bel's sister Leah in particular has done extraordinary work, in exceptionally painful circumstances, to keep Bel's music and her story alive. It would be a fitting conclusion to that work for Bel's album - a worthy winner anyway, purely on its own artistic merits - to get this year's award. The film should win prizes too, for telling Bel's story with such care.

Vote here: https://www.sayaward.com

The lyrics in the photo are from her song A Way From Rage, a @mhfestival commission in 2019. by @andreweatonlewis

It's #bandcampfriday, the day when all proceeds of sales on Bandcamp go directly to artists. This is particularly valuable to all of us independent musicians. Please take the opportunity to support the following recent releases by kindred spirits:

1. Two Drifters by @hamishbrownmusic, lush, evocative instrumentals by my former Swimmer One bandmate, a close friend and collaborator for over 20 years.
2. Revival, all killer no filler guitar anthems by my fellow Isle of Lewis singer-songwriter @scott_c_park who I've had the pleasure of working with a few times now. (Track two, That's Love, is like a Hebridean LCD Soundsystem and one of my favourite songs of this year).
3. Birdies by @micro_wave60, aka my old Glasgow pal Gerry Campbell. Brainy, expertly crafted guitar pop for fans of Thomas Dolby and XTC.
4. Perpetual Motion by The Studio System, the latest project by David Shah who I used to share stages with in London when we were younger and more glamorous. David's home-made @the_melting_ice_caps
albums - which pop up on Bandcamp every year or so, always as free or 'pay what you want' purchases - have been a consistent source of comfort and joy over the years and I recommend them too.

You could also buy my stuff, of course. It's not hard to find. See less by @andreweatonlewis

NEWS.
Earlier this month @ralphtonge and I performed a live musical score for @anlanntair's premiere of Jill Smith's beautiful film An Avebury Journey. It went well so now we're doing it again, at The Edge Cafe in Aird Uig on Wednesday 14 October. Honoured to have been asked, and happy to do more if there's continued interest.
This one's free and unticketed. Mostly for locals but visitors also welcome. by @andreweatonlewis

Very sad to hear today's news that @theskinnymag is closing. There were already so few places left where you could find in depth, passionate features on Scottish culture, and this leaves a void that will affect a lot of people. The Skinny championed musicians, theatre-makers, visual artists, film-makers and festivals that were sometimes barely written about elsewhere (even in The List). I discovered loads of things on its pages that I might not have found otherwise.

I’m also very grateful to them for featuring my own work as a musician, numerous times. The Skinny ran one of the loveliest reviews we ever had for my band’s debut album (and gave us four stars for the second one too). I was even on the cover once, with @bissettcora, @witheredhand, @meursault, @oldmanhoch, @hamishbrownmusic and @firchlisthekeening, for our Whatever Gets You Through The Night project at the Arches. I can’t find the actual cover shot – I have a paper copy in a cupboard somewhere – but this, via @nicola.meighan, was from the photo shoot. Proud moment anyway.

I applaud the optimism of their closing statement, as hard as it must have been to write:

'Even in dark times, there is still a wealth of vibrant, creative and exciting art being created across Scotland, and dozens of scenes and movements worth championing. That drive and spirit has inspired and invigorated us at The Skinny so many times over the years – let’s all do what we can to help that continue.'

The Skinny had lots of talented and dedicated people on its team. I really hope everyone is doing ok and can find other platforms for their work.

EDIT: Also gutted for everyone involved in @festmag which may not return since it was run by the same company that is now going into liquidation. A big loss to the Edinburgh festivals if so. by @andreweatonlewis

THIS FRIDAY, @ralphtonge and I will perform an improvised live score for the first ever public screening of Jill Smith's extraordinary film An Avebury Journey, at @anlanntair. Very excited to be a part of this event. Shot on Super 8 around 1982/1983 but unseen until now, the film marks the beginning of an artistic journey that culminated in Jill's Zodiac Journey project for the @fruitmarketgallery in 2023 and 2024 (in collaboration with @mhairi_law). The screening is free but advance booking is essential. Ron Coleman's final film, Caught in this Moment of Time, will be showing at the same event. by @andreweatonlewis

Tired late night thought: how the hell did flying become ordinary, an inconvenience to complain about? It's a miracle that you can just sit in a chair and look out at this. That human beings can travel through clouds, can be high enough to see the curve of the Earth. I've seen some great stuff at the Edinburgh festival in the past few weeks but none of it felt anything like as profound - as sublime - as the journey that brought me there. I think it's partly because flying terrifies me. Every time I get on a plane I'm convinced I might not make it back to the ground. Every time I do land, I feel so grateful and relieved for everything good in my life - so glad just to see my family again, to not be dead in a crash - that I want to hold on to it more tightly. Flying feels a bit like defying the gods, I think, or just defying mortality. How dare we presume that we could go up there - a place our bodies were not in any way designed for - and actually come back?

Anyway, here is some film of the sky above northern Scotland earlier today. by @andreweatonlewis

Evening light at @edfringe (Saturday) and in the Outer Hebrides (Monday). The privilege of being able to experience these two things within days of each other is not something I will ever take for granted, even if switching from one to the other is quite disorientating. Neither feels real. by @andreweatonlewis
