SMHAF is 20 today! 🎂 🎉

Our 2026 festival has officially launched and we’re so excited for this year’s incredible programme.

For two decades, SMHAF has championed lived experience, challenged stigma, shaped conversations and celebrated creativity. It’s grown from humble beginnings into one of the world’s leading mental health arts festivals.

Here’s to everyone who has been part of the journey and to all the artists, organisations and communities who will be lighting up grassroots spaces and cultural venues across Scotland this October and November 💜

📸 Take a look through some of our memories from the last 20 years below. We’d love to see yours - tag us in your throwback pics @mhfestival

As part of our editorial series about #youthmentalhealth, we chatted with @andreweatonlewis from @mentalhealthfoundation about how the arts and culture world can communicate about #mentalhealth, as well as improving it.

It was a joy to share the stage and night with @elsamctaggartmusic at the Artist Gathering in @anlanntair Stornoway.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and thank you to @andreweatonlewis for the invitation—it was a joy and a pleasure.

It turns out Elsa and I share a love of charity shops, good shoes and art in all its many forms!

Great evening at Andrew Eaton-Lewis’s gig with support from Mike Winder. Andrew was kind enough to let me add some atmospheric guitar to a couple of songs which was a real privilege. @andreweatonlewis #outerhebrides #isleoflewis #scotland #westernisles

A huge thank you to everyone who came to our exhibition at Dusgadh — it was such a special evening. 🙏

Sharing this show with Trish Bell has been a real privilege, and it wouldn’t have been possible without some wonderful people behind us.

Thank you to Andrew Eaton-Lewis for collaborating with me for the brief musical backdrop. 🎵

To everyone who allowed me to photograph them — your trust means everything. These images only exist because of your generosity and openness.

And a very special thank you to Fiona, whose expert curation brought the whole thing together with such care and vision. We couldn’t have asked for better hands to shape this exhibition. 🌟

Grateful beyond words. ❤️ if you weren’t able to make it, the exhibition is open throughout May. All work is for sale, and additional prints available on request.

MEDUSA 🐍
It’s been a long time coming but today we finally started rehearsals on Medusa and I am buzzing!

For nearly ten years now I’ve been trying to find a way to talk about PMDD on stage and nothing felt quite right until I landed on the story of Medusa, a woman who was assaulted, punished for being assaulted and then viewed as a monster.
She was never given her own myth by the Ancient Greeks, only featured in other peoples so I decided I wanted to write her one. One that is informed by my own experiences of PMDD and the strange and terrifying things it does to your mind and body.

My adaption is written in contemporary Scots, features a whole host of beautiful radges and is set in a queer nightclub, always best to write about what you know eh.

I’ll post more info over the next few weeks but for now I’m just super grateful to be in a rehearsal room with an incredibly talented team who are treating this work with real love and care.

I’ll pop a ticket link in my bio. We have just four performances, all relaxed, one low sensory (low lighting and sound) and a sliding scale pay what you can afford ticket policy. Get them before they go!
