My 1st group fitness class nobody showed up!!
But I kept showing up…
.
This is a highlight reel, but I always highlight real.
.
These 13 years have been a roller coaster of highs & lows. This industry is a beautiful beast. I love it when people say “ I want to work in fitness “ because when you pull back the curtain and see the hustle, the commitment, the passion it takes…
The early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays.
Days off mean no income.
But with that being said, it’s the BEST freakin’ industry in the world. Because every time we are running on 🪫 the classes, the clients, they fill us up 🔋
Every time we don’t want to put on the headset, by the end of class, we don’t want to take it off.
The connection to you, the clients, is contagious.
So for every client that’s ever given me the opportunity to teach you… THANK YOU for helping me live out my passion.
.
I’m HERE for anyone who’s on the brink of “how do I get into this industry?” Or “what can I do to grow?”
I’ve learned a lot over these years. I learned a lot of things that worked for me and things that didn’t. I’m not saying I have YOUR solution, but I’m here to give you some analogies 😜 #groupfitness #rumbleboxing #doyourumble #otf #businessoffitness by @andrewgstern

If you’re new to group fitness, start here.
If you’ve been doing this a while, use it as a reminder.

These are coaching tips that actually make classes better,
for your clients and for you.

Inside:
	1. Cue for the click
	2. Stop distracting yourself
	3. The public-speaking advice every coach needs
	4. The two qualities great trainers share
	5. Investment advice (for coaches)
	6. Why “community” gets overused
	7. The class is a mirror
	8. How to read the room
	9. Painting moments, not movements
	10. When teaching starts to feel heavy

Save this. Come back to it. Use it.

Great foreshadowing builds fluidity.
The room isn’t stopping and starting.
That kind of flow isn’t accidental.
It comes from giving the right cue, with the right amount of runway, at the right time.
Here are a few tips ➡️➡️

I’ve always believed great fitness instructors create moments, but @chelseaagreen gave me a different way to think about it…

A moment is only as powerful as the build.

In wrestling, the biggest pop doesn’t happen by accident. There’s an emotional arc. Character. Storytelling. Tension. Setbacks. And eventually, a comeback people are rooting for.

A great fitness class isn’t that different.
You’re not just moving people from exercise to exercise.
You’re building toward something they can FEEL not just physically but emotionally. by @andrewgstern

I used to think moving up meant having more answers and having more people work FOR me.

Turns out, a lot of it is making sure you don’t lose the things that made you good at the job in the first place & working FOR more people.

The further you get from the day-to-day, the easier it is to lose touch with the people, the product, and the experience you’re actually responsible for.

So I try to keep coming back to the same things…
Stay close.
Stay curious.
Stay a customer.

Stay yourself.

The worst feedback I ever hear… “have fun up there!”

If the trainer can’t tell you what to actually do differently next class, it’s not feedback.

#boutiquefitness #groupfitness

At OTF, I was taught to evaluate coaches from the sidelines with a checklist of things.

That method has its place, but I’ve learned I give better feedback when I’m in it vs just observing

I want to know what the class actually feels like from the member’s side, not just what it looks like from the back of the room.

That shift changed how I coach coaches.

The 6 C’s have helped me coach thousands of trainers.

But above all, I’m asking one question…

Would I come back to this class???

The 6 C’s help me understand why the answer is yes or no.

One of the easiest mistakes to make when coaching trainers is confusing your preference with their performance.

Just because I’d teach it differently doesn’t mean it was wrong.

I also like to give the feedback in the moment while everything is still fresh.

But I always follow it up in writing.

I’ve learned that trainers can sometimes hear feedback differently than I intended it. Putting it in an email helps make sure we’re aligned on what I actually meant and what we’re working on next.

Trainers 🚨 when someone takes the time to give you thoughtful feedback, that’s a good thing.

Someone is investing in you. They see more in you. Be coachable. DONT hear it as criticism.

Managers 🚨 avoiding the hard conversation doesn’t protect the trainer.

It hurts them. It hurts the members.
And eventually, it hurts the community everyone is working so hard to build. Give the feedback!!

Then keep showing up to help them get better. by @andrewgstern
