The creatures of the Xenotone consume saturation and are influenced by the tide, the sun, cloud cover and wind speed. They communicate in single words—often misheard and repeated, towards a new language, passed on over generations. by @andrewxburrell

What emerges when a physical and a virtual ecology are brought together: entangled as each other’s other? Into the Xenotone follows the path laid out by this question via a series of practice based research inquiries. by @andrewxburrell

I can remember,
as a kid,
standing on the
mudflats at low tide,
surrounded by
mangrove trees.

I would watch soldier
crabs pour out of
their burrows and
busily forage before
retreating
underground,
to endure
the returning sea.

I didn’t have
the language for it
at the time, but I
suspected the tide was saying something.

The tide
was speaking
to the mud,
and from the mud
to the roots,
and from the roots
to the trees.

That
suspicion
never
left
me.

the Mangrove:
A speculative design
proposition towards
a sympoiesis with
extended digital and

Issue 15 of ArteActa, "Beyond Human Communality: Encounters and Limits," gathers seven artistic investigations and an introductory essay exploring the coexistence of humans with more-than-human entities—real, fictional, or mythological—alongside the methodologies that make such exploration possible. Ranging from multi-planetary politics and space mining to mycelium interfaces, plant-based improvisation, firefly vision, melting glaciers, and wolf mythology, the contributions use artistic, scientific, and technological strategies to mediate cross-species dialogue and imagine life beyond human boundaries.

During @caw.syd we're hosting an evening of readings and performances that reveal how storytelling can shape our understanding of, and responses to, the biodiversity and climate crises.

What happens when we centre voices beyond the human? When we speculate futures for worlds we are only beginning to inhabit? When we hold both ecological grief and critical hope? This event offers a space to encounter creative works that refuse easy answers—pieces that invite us to sit with uncertainty, to listen differently, and to find new ways of living on a damaged planet.
