It wasn’t until she switched on the TV that she found out the magnitude of the truth!

I wanted her to know who I was, the real me, before anything else.

Laying the foundation in a relationship is so important when getting to know each other.

This worked for us……….

3rd year Clinical Psychologists in training lecture….💡

Always a pleasure working with clinical psychologists both those in training and those with many years of experience. @microscope_consultancy

Across adult mental health, children and young people, older adults, neuropsychology, neurodiversity, learning disabilities and forensic settings, the lens we use matters.

It shapes how we understand distress, formulate, diagnose and create psychologically safe spaces for people to share their stories.

Sometimes the most important part of practice is being willing to see through a different lens.

NB: these are not the experiences of all, just what has been seen for over 20 years in my practice and role as a consultant.

@officialhackneyabbott’s place in British history is often summarised in one sentence: in 1987, she became the first Black woman elected to the UK Parliament.

Born in Paddington in 1953 to Jamaican parents from the Windrush generation, Abbott grew up in London with ambitions some people around her thought were beyond someone like her. A teacher discouraged her from applying to Cambridge. She applied anyway.

In 1973, she arrived at Newnham College to study history. She has said that being part of a women’s college helped her see that women could lead and shape institutions.

That confidence would matter in the years ahead.

After Cambridge, Abbott worked in the Civil Service, as a journalist and broadcaster, and in local government. Her route into Parliament was not straightforward. She had already faced unsuccessful attempts to be selected as a parliamentary candidate.

In June 1987, she was elected to Parliament.

That moment was historic, but it was not hers alone. Paul Boateng and Bernie Grant were also elected in 1987, becoming the first Black men elected to the Commons. Together, they changed who could be seen in the chamber and who could imagine a place there.

Abbott went on to serve as Shadow Home Secretary from 2016 to 2020. Across her parliamentary career, she has spoken and campaigned on civil liberties, race equality, policing, education and social justice.

Today, she is the longest-serving woman in the House of Commons, known by the title Mother of the House.

Her significance is not simply that she was the first. It is that she stayed, represented her constituency across decades of change, and continued to bring issues into Parliament that are too often treated as marginal.

Diane Abbott’s journey reminds us that progress is made by people who keep going when the route is uncertain and by those who use their position to make the route more visible for others.

This Black History Month, we recognise Diane Abbott: a political trailblazer whose presence changed British public life, and whose long service continues to shape what representation in Parliament means. by @andrezharriott

Last night was a real full-circle moment.

@catchuphomie I’m incredibly proud of you.

To come and see you headline your first O2 show was something special.

Thank you for the shout-out from the stage and for saying you hoped you’d made me proud.

You absolutely have. 🙏🏾

You were a leader as a child, always respectful to me, and I always wanted more for you and the whole of your peer group. We really were in the trenches in those moments 😅

I also had the pleasure of bumping into two other kings I worked with many years ago, both doing incredibly well. Seeing where everyone is now reminded me why this work means so much.

You’re on your way. Keep going. Keep growing. Big, big blessings. 👑

Next stop… Indigo at The O2.

And after that, I’ll see you in the O2 Arena. 💫

For Black History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the musical lineage that surrounds Damage, and the part we’ve been fortunate to play in it.

For me, that story reaches back to Millie Small. Her recording of “My Boy Lollipop” helped bring Jamaican ska to a huge international audience. It reached No. 2 in both the UK and the US, and opened doors for Jamaican music to be heard around the world.

From there, the story keeps moving and changing. Sade brought a distinctive British soul sound to international audiences. Soul II Soul brought together soul, reggae, house and sound-system culture, creating music that travelled far beyond the dancefloor. Beverley Knight carried British soul into a new generation, with a powerful voice and a sound rooted in her own time and experience.

These artists made space for Black British music to be heard in different ways. They remind us that there is no single sound or route through this history. It is a story of artists making something new from the music, communities and experiences around them.

Damage came into that story as five young Londoners finding our voices and building our sound together. Our songs reached listeners too: “Love II Love” peaked at No. 12 in the UK singles chart; “Forever” reached No. 6; “Love Guaranteed” No. 7; and “Wonderful Tonight” No. 3.

The story is still being written. In 2024, we joined Boyz II Men on their UK tour. In 2027, we’re looking forward to joining Gabrielle on her UK tour.

When I think about lineage, I think about connection: artists, producers, vocal coaches, record labels, DJs, club nights, radio and audiences all helping music travel and change.

We’re grateful to the people who opened doors for us, and proud that Damage’s music remains part of this ongoing Black British story.

Dr Mamie Phipps Clark was a pioneering psychologist whose research made visible the effects of racism and segregation on children’s sense of identity.

• In 1943, she became the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in psychology from Columbia University.

• Her research with Kenneth Clark examined how Black children developed racial awareness and how segregation affected their self-perception.

• Their findings were cited in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling, which declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

• In 1946, she co-founded the Northside Center for Child Development in Harlem, providing psychological and educational services to children and families who were not being adequately served.

Dr Clark’s work connected research with the realities of children’s lives. She showed why a child’s development cannot be understood without examining the environment, relationships and systems shaping their experience.

For Black History Month, we recognise Dr Mamie Phipps Clark: a psychologist whose scholarship helped challenge segregation, and whose work created lasting support for children and families. by @andrezharriott

This week, we had an important experience working with Hertfordshire County Council Youth Justice Management Board.

Through a range of creative and engaging approaches, we explored how partnership working can be strengthened across the system. Together, we considered how to apply a culturally sensitive lens to children’s experiences as they move through services.

The discussion went beyond how organisations collaborate. It focused on how we can actively support and enhance collaboration: making boundaries between parts of the system more permeable, so that teams can work across them with greater understanding and purpose.

The feedback was incredible. We met a strong team with a clear commitment to working together, closing gaps and improving how children are understood and supported.
Thank you to everyone who contributed so openly and thoughtfully. We look forward to continuing the work.

Thank you Lydia Phillips

Culturally sensitive decision-making, assessments, and practice matter when working with every child.

It is especially important for children and young adults but especially those who are disproportionately represented in our systems.

Thank you to Lydia Phillips and the senior leadership team for the invitation to support and the investment in your team/service. @hertscc Youth Justice Service

✅ Honoured to be working with Hertfordshire County Council Youth Justice Services to explore how our six-step framework can support more thoughtful, culturally sensitive approaches to decision-making, assessment and practice.

✅ Together, we explored identity, disparities, adultification, intergenerational trauma, power and authority, and how these shape children’s experiences and the decisions made about them.

💡 The team’s feedback has been phenomenal.

I’m looking forward to continuing this work with Hertfordshire Youth Justice Services, the Strategic Management Board and partners across the county.

This is part of our ongoing national work: helping services develop the frameworks, shared understanding, shared language, and confidence to put cultural context at the heart of their work with children. by @andrezharriott

@olusoga

Professor David Olusoga OBE has helped change how Britain understands and tells its history.

A historian, author, broadcaster and BAFTA-winning filmmaker, he has brought rigorous historical research to a wide public through books and television. His work includes Black & British: A Forgotten History, Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners, The World’s War and A House Through Time.

His work asks whose experiences have been left out of the national story, and what becomes visible when we look again at Britain’s past through the histories of empire, slavery and Black life.

As Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester, he also connects academic history with public understanding. In 2019, he was awarded an OBE for services to history and community integration.

For Black History Month, we recognise David Olusoga’s contribution to making history more inclusive, more truthful and more relevant to the present. by @andrezharriott
