3rd year Clinical Psychologists in training lecture….💡

Always a pleasure working with clinical psychologists both those in training and those with many years of experience. @microscope_consultancy

Across adult mental health, children and young people, older adults, neuropsychology, neurodiversity, learning disabilities and forensic settings, the lens we use matters.

It shapes how we understand distress, formulate, diagnose and create psychologically safe spaces for people to share their stories.

Sometimes the most important part of practice is being willing to see through a different lens.

NB: these are not the experiences of all, just what has been seen for over 20 years in my practice and role as a consultant.

This week, we had an important experience working with Hertfordshire County Council Youth Justice Management Board.

Through a range of creative and engaging approaches, we explored how partnership working can be strengthened across the system. Together, we considered how to apply a culturally sensitive lens to children’s experiences as they move through services.

The discussion went beyond how organisations collaborate. It focused on how we can actively support and enhance collaboration: making boundaries between parts of the system more permeable, so that teams can work across them with greater understanding and purpose.

The feedback was incredible. We met a strong team with a clear commitment to working together, closing gaps and improving how children are understood and supported.
Thank you to everyone who contributed so openly and thoughtfully. We look forward to continuing the work.

Thank you Lydia Phillips

Culturally sensitive decision-making, assessments, and practice matter when working with every child.

It is especially important for children and young adults but especially those who are disproportionately represented in our systems.

Thank you to Lydia Phillips and the senior leadership team for the invitation to support and the investment in your team/service. @hertscc Youth Justice Service

✅ Honoured to be working with Hertfordshire County Council Youth Justice Services to explore how our six-step framework can support more thoughtful, culturally sensitive approaches to decision-making, assessment and practice.

✅ Together, we explored identity, disparities, adultification, intergenerational trauma, power and authority, and how these shape children’s experiences and the decisions made about them.

💡 The team’s feedback has been phenomenal.

I’m looking forward to continuing this work with Hertfordshire Youth Justice Services, the Strategic Management Board and partners across the county.

This is part of our ongoing national work: helping services develop the frameworks, shared understanding, shared language, and confidence to put cultural context at the heart of their work with children. by @microscope_consultancy

@harrowcouncil Youth Justice Service thank you for the welcome. @microscope_consultancy @thelguk

After spending a few days with you all, I have come away genuinely impressed by the culture the leadership has created.

A culture where people feel seen.
Where people can come as they are.
Where mistakes can become opportunities for learning rather than something to fear.

And most importantly, a team doing incredible work with children, families and young adults, including those navigating the transition into probation and adult services.

Yesterday we created a particularly safe and reflective space. At times it was highly emotive, but it was also incredibly special.

This is experiential learning, not training.

It is about creating the conditions for practitioners to think, feel, reflect and apply the learning directly to the complexity of their work.

The team worked with our P.E.C.S. Framework, a culturally sensitive assessment and formulation tool we have developed to help professionals look beyond the presenting issue and explore the cultural, systemic and intergenerational experiences that may be shaping a person’s life.

We’re now using P.E.C.S. across youth justice, mental health, education, probation and other services, as we continue to roll it out more widely across the UK.

The Harrow team used the framework exceptionally well, bringing real curiosity and depth to the group task.

Thank you again to the leadership and wider team for trusting the process and creating the conditions for this kind of work.

And this isn’t the end.

I am looking forward to returning to work with the Strategic Management Board, alongside the additional work we’ll be developing together.

An incredible few days. See you again soon.

With great clinical responsibility comes great power, and the potential for intergenerational impact.

It was an honour as @microscope_consultancy return to the University of @uniofsurrey , working with the next generation of Clinical Psychologists as they move towards completing their doctorates.

We created a space to think beyond clinical technique.

We explored watershed moments in the UK and what they mean for the holding environment between clinician and patient.

We explored social injustice, racism, culture, leadership, power and envy. How these dynamics can be projected upwards and downwards within systems, but also within our own families, particularly when we may be the first to achieve something of this magnitude.

It was emotional. Reflective. And incredibly important.

For many years, I’ve worked alongside children, young adults and adults in criminal justice and community settings who have been reluctant to engage with mental health services.

Part of my role has always been to understand, bridge the gap and deconstruct those barriers.

That’s why preparing our future psychologists, as well as experienced clinicians across psychological professions, to engage meaningfully across cultures, communities and intersectional identities matters so much.

My hope is that we continue towards a future where mental health support is normalised, trusted and genuinely accessible to those who need it most.

To the students from yesterday, thank you for giving me your entire day.

Above all, never underestimate the power, privilege and responsibility bestowed upon you.

Please tread carefully, so as not to replicate harm.

Onwards you go.

The work is not easy across criminal justice, mental health and education.

How do we keep staff safe emotionally and psychologically?

If you have lost children in the field, it’s important to acknowledge they will not be the last unfortunately, and the organisation cannot contain this for them, so we must prepare our hearts.

🗣️A day of applied learning.

@microscope_consultancy

A day of seeing change in practice @southamptoncitycouncil Youth Justice Services.

✅ I had the privilege of returning to Southampton Youth Justice Service to spend the day with the team, exploring not only what we have delivered a few weeks ago but the impact that work is now having across practice.

What stood out was the feedback from leadership and practitioners:

→ Improvements in the quality and depth of assessments for children.

→ Practitioners reporting greater confidence in using culturally sensitive language.

→ Increased confidence to respectfully challenge thinking and assumptions in multi-agency meetings.

→ A stronger shared language for understanding complexity, difference and disproportionality.

We also introduced the team to our P.E.C.S framework, developed from our AI layer, helping to improve decision making and assessments.

PECS is designed to help practitioners quickly access relevant information, connect the dots and develop more in-depth, dynamic formulations, supporting better thinking rather than simply producing more information.

Always proud of the work we are doing with Youth Justice Services nationally and increasingly across probation, mental health and education.

The ambition remains the same:

To help professionals see more, think differently and act with greater confidence.

Honoured to be doing this work.

What if you took the risk to bring your authentic self into every space?

What if you took all the learning across criminal justice, mental health, probation, youth justice, education, systems, psychodynamic approaches and used it to push services to use a renewed lens?

What if you worked with #clinicalpsychology #psychology and other psychological profession all in one city, then linked in youth justice and doctoral students. Would this begin a ripple effect improving assessments, interventions and diagnosis ?

What if you followed your calling nationally ?
