When people ask me why I started the surf project in January 2024… Here’s a little glimpse of how surf lifestyle is part of my daily life since I moved to US in 2012. My husband surfs, photographs, draws and paints surf through a lifetime. It was almost impossible for me not to love it as well. Besides the fact that I’m surrounded by surf art hanging on every wall of my home, be part of art shows, celebrate other surf artists, meet some of local surfers before even think about creating my project, I used to go on photo dates with my husband and take pictures of the surf scenes with him. It naturally grew on me. I had the idea of the project in 2023 and started shooting right in January/24. Everything happened very organically and every time I have someone new in front of my camera, brings me the same joy as if I was shooting for the first time. This project opened my eyes to a brand new world of soulful people, present, resilient, dedicated. This community has been giving me so much life and purpose, specially in times when my health pulls me down. As most of you know, I have MS , and some days this project lifts my spirits up. So when I say to everyone that I photographed that the opportunity to have them in front of my camera means more than they can imagine, It’s true. It means everything to me. Here’s a few favorites from my project. I captured so many beautiful images along these 2 years. My intentions for the surf project is to photograph 100 surfers and create a photo book. One Hundred faces that are part of the local surf community in Virginia Beach. I hope that I can capture a little bit of the essence of each person in front of my camera. The more diverse it gets, the more I love and that’s the beauty of it. Surf is for everyone with a free spirit. Project like this takes time and effort, I’m here for it. Beyond grateful to share the images that will be at the Flow State exhibition at the @creativewellarts from March 10 - 22. It’s so hard to choose which one, among so many favorites of my local surf project. Some of you know my Double Exposure is made in the camera during the session. I shoot the first image and I’m not able to see how it looks before I capture the second one. A few seconds later I can see how the final picture looks. It requires attention and intuition at the same time and that’s what I love about this. The surprise, unpredictability of it. The joy and excitement to check the final image will never get old. It’s always the sweetest surprise! It’s all unique compositions that I would never be able to replicate, not even if I tried. I’m so thankful for this opportunity! • I photographed Brooke in a dreamy summer day, where lighting and colors were in such harmony. Brooke is one of those people who is effortlessly comfortable to be around, it’s peaceful being around her. Getting to follow her also in her other passion, sewing and creating beautiful clothes completely from recycled fabrics is amazing! I’m so happy that I got to know her!! I hope I can photograph her again, and many of you I met through this project in other occasion as well. You’re all unique interesting people, connected by the love of being simply fearless and this inspires me more than you can imagine.
