With fire season upon us, we wanted to share some of the work that has been happening behind the scenes at The Lost Wonder Hut to help prepare for it.

Over the last 15 years, the Lewis family — both the previous owners and the current ones — have worked hard to create and maintain a defensible space around the hut. As you can see in the first photo, there is now a substantial clearing surrounding the cabin. Years ago, the hut sat almost entirely within the trees.

There is also a fire evacuation route uphill from the hut, visible in this photo, to provide an additional layer of safety if it is ever needed.

Last year we replaced the siding with metal, and this year we installed a new metal roof in an effort to make the hut more resistant to wildfire. In the coming weeks, we will also be applying a fire-resistant coating designed to withstand direct ember contact for up to 30 minutes before ignition.

It’s been a tremendous amount of work, and we’re not finished yet. We hope we never have to discover whether these efforts are enough.

Our hearts are with the families and communities affected by the recent wildfire on the Utah–Colorado border, as well as the wildlife and landscapes that have been impacted.

Please be smart out there. No flames. No sparks. No exceptions.

Don’t be the reason our forests burn.

I can't wait to marry this guy. Can't think of anything that has felt more right in my life. I am incredibly blessed not only to have a partner, but a friend, a support system, someone who challenges me to be better, an adventure buddy, somebody who makes me laugh every day, my heart didn't know it could be this full. Surprisingly the summer is the biggest season of work at the hut. It takes a couple of months to get things ready for the next ski season, including cutting 20 cords of wood for the stove! ✨Hut Update✨
1. You can drive almost all the way up to the hut or all the way if you're feeling brave. There are some drifts left in the Aetna slide shoot.
2. Or you can park just before the slide path.
3. People are skiing the NE face of clover and it's looking great!
4. PSA if you trash anything at the hut please let me know. Shit happens and it's a lot better if I know what I need to fix before I go up. Also please remember dogs are welcome but their hair and dog prints on the bed when you leave are not. taken in Clover Mountain by @andymausermusic

Pinball rapid is one of the most technical in Browns Canyon at any level but especially tricky at low water. You've got to park your boat up on a table top rock and then see if you can wiggle it off to the left (right not recommended as it brings you towards a decapitator rock for whichever poor soul is sitting on the river right side). Baby boats for the win right now. DM me for instruction if you want to know how to get down this kind of flow.
