My next #farmerfit30 challenge is kicking off on Monday folks.

#LateNightHistory — Phil Bucklew, D-Day, and BUD/S

I had the privilege to attend the retirement ceremony of one of my friends who served 20 years in the SEAL Teams. It was a Friday on August 2, 2019, when I left my hotel and entered an Uber. The destination puzzled the Uber driver as he was wondering why this 25-year-old dude wearing a fancy-pancy-and-absolute-🔥shirt 😎 was going to the home of the hardest military training facility in the US military.

When I arrived I flagged down some dude that was my age, he had just received his trident during a ceremony marking the end of his SEAL Qualification Training (SQT) class, and I asked him where the Grinder was. He laughed like I was supposed to know and pointed me in the direction. I met up with some One More Wave team riders and we walked over.

Before the retirement ceremony commenced, I asked a BUD/S instructor to take a picture of me with the creature of the Black Lagoon to my left and the bronze plaque of Phil H. Bucklew over my right shoulder.

Bucklew is a demigod figure in Naval Special Warfare (NSW) and, for some reason, isn’t the most well known Navy SEAL. He served in every NSW unit between World War II and Vietnam. In January, six months prior to the D-Day invasion where he later would lead Scout Boats to guide landing crafts into Omaha Beach, he completed an INSANE reconnaissance mission.

Bucklew and another Scouts and Raiders commando slipped through the night concealed by a layer of fog to collect sand samples of the beach to determine whether it was hard enough to support heavy vehicles. Bucklew was twice awarded the Navy Cross, ran solo missions in China, served with the CIA in Korea, and did some clandestine operations in Vietnam.

He also happened to be a Cleveland Rams (different city then) tight end, completed his Masters degree from Columbia University, and coached the football team at the Naval Academy.
