Meeting Michelle Obama during the Becoming tour, thanks to my friend Art Smith, was one of the happiest days of my life. 💗

I only had a couple of minutes with her, but we talked about what an extraordinary time it was to live in Washington, D.C. during President Obama’s inauguration and administration, and about the importance of education. It wasn’t a long conversation, but it was memorable. by @andymight

Friends, I’ve been given a microphone in a bar and permission to talk about Frankenstein. This is more or less what tenure was supposed to lead to.

Join me October 28 for Frankie Goes to Hollywood, a trip through the strange afterlives of Mary Shelley’s monster. We’ll follow his borrowed body parts into Edward Scissorhands, The Iron Giant, superheroes, musicals, and queer cult cinema. Hollywood has spent two centuries taking this story apart and sewing it into something else. Occasionally, it even changes the bolts.

This is one of my favorite things about teaching film: that moment when a movie you’ve loved for years suddenly reveals a weird relative.

Come have a drink with me. Bring a friend who cries at The Iron Giant. We’ll understand each other.

In my last post, I explained why the first assignment in my horror class is about the students. Whenever I teach Horror Genre, they start with an autoethnography of their own spectatorship: what scares them, what doesn’t, and what that reveals. I share my own answers too, so they know the vulnerability runs both ways.
There’s a catch. I’ve spent a career learning not to be scared by horror. A horror scholar describing what frightens him is a bit like a magician describing being fooled. Writing mine meant finding where my “too much” line was, and what I’d built on either side of it.
Here it is: same handout, same headings, same 600 words.

Horror isn’t just a library of tropes—it’s a mirror, which is why my students start the semester by studying their own nervous systems. New essay.

Our second table read brought the cast of rogues back together for BAT HUMBUG! An XXXmas Carol in Gotham—the sequel to Denver Fringe award-winner Arkham A$$ylum.

Think A Christmas Carol, but Scrooge has a leather fetish and the ghosts have receipts.

This December 3-6 at Clocktower Cabaret. It’s gonna be a Dickens.

Partisan commentary accidentally stumbled into a radical defense of bodily freedom, and we need to talk about it.
