A couple of months ago I did an insta ‘24 hours in my life’ of an overnight work trip I did to Newcastle NSW. Our long long long time and amazing family friend @katewright2 saw it and said ‘I wanna come on a trip with you Ange!’ Then Mum piped up wanted to come too. So we made it happen 🥳

Depending who you travel with and how often you do it, it can feel overwhelming and anxiety inducing so it was cool to lead the way and try to make it a relaxed and seamless 3 night jaunt, back to Newy 😊

And it was. Lady Luck was on our side with so many things falling into place and experiences landing on our laps. Including us taking SO much luggage (those who travel with me know blankets, towels, comfy dressing gowns are a must) and thank gawd, our mystery rental was a massive X-trail 🙌🏼

So many highlights…the Quokkas, me and quokka Lawrie fell in love, he stole our hearts. And the Joey and Lemon-Myrtle 😍 The low-flying fighter jet thingies, soooo loud and exhilarating!! Wish they took passengers as we would have put Mum in there - she’s an adrenaline junkie! Kate has an infatuation with pelicans and they were abundant. We saw dolphins, swam (farrrking hell the ocean was cold!). Ate at amazing places, @lightyearsasiandiner yum! And a very very special meal @muserestaurant_ in the Hunter Valley.

@huntervalleywildlifepark was one of the two most incredible animal places I’ve been to. Didn’t feel an ounce of sadness about the animals, they were all so happeeeeee 🤗

Newy is a little bogan around the edges, but jeez peeps were so friendly, relaxed and welcoming. The coast and the ocean pools and vicinity to Port Stephens & the Hunter Valley. It’s epic and I’d go back again.

Made so many precious memories with my two travel mates, where we going next!?

After almost two weeks of brutal Influenza A, I was still feeling SO lethargic, but had mad cabin fever.

With no fishing weather on the horizon, my usual cabin-fever remedy was out, so on Friday Anthony and I looked online for a little getaway. Being school holidays, everything was booked or way too pricey. We’d just about lost heart, and energy, when we stumbled across this gorgeous little cabin on Lake Tarawera… that was available!

Turns out it was brand new, had JUST gone live and we were their very first guests 🙌🏼

The view. The sunrises. The outdoor bath. The little fire pit. The covered deck. The ridiculously comfortable bed and beautiful bedding. Being able to take the JetSki and park at our own jetty. The kererū and tūī. And the twinkliest stars I’ve ever seen ✨

We braved two windy, cold missions over to Hot Water Beach, to find completely sheltered, sunny little spots on the lake, hanging out with paradise ducklings.

I find lakes so good for rejuvenation. If it was the ocean within reach, I wouldn’t be able to leave it alone. There’s always so many surprises, anything can happen, and I’d have exhausted myself when I still needed rest. Lakes are different. A known entity. Permission to just chill.

And this was exactly what we both needed. Beautiful, restful, peaceful and uplifting time together. Rejuvenated ❤️

We had two nights there. I arrived by ski and left by ski, never even saw the driveway haha.

I’m confident I can finish this week, and this wild year, strong 💪🏼 Feeling soooo much better 🙌🏼

The owners have poured so much love into this place. Every little detail feels thoughtful and generous. You can tell they love it as much as their guests will.

1000% recommend. We’ll absolutely be back. 🥰 taken in Lake Tarawera by @angeaotearoa

Always an adventure when GG, Hawk (10) and I get together. We’re three peas in a pod – up for anything.

We kicked things off in style, blasting Hawk’s choice of Billie Jean through Babes’ sound system as we cruised through the 5-knot zone. Everyone could hear us. Plenty of smiles, a few mana waves from the bridge. An absolute banger!

In just over 24 hours we made bluefin sashimi, went cockling, cooked aglio e olio with fresh cockles, had a Star Bath, walked the beach, went for a hoon and a fish… and got rescued by the Coastguard.

We’d stopped on the spit, but I wasn’t sure the anchor would hold in the surge. While trying to get us off the sand, the anchor rope slipped overboard and disappeared straight into the jet unit. Danger level was 1/10, so no big drama. we were just very stuck on the wrong side of the harbour.

Hawk immediately got busy building a survival shelter on the beach. Cute we thought, until we discovered it was only for him. 😆

Thirty minutes later the Raglan Coastguard arrived in their GINORMOUS boat. Absolute legends. No judgement, just friendly, professional people who got us sorted.

I was happy to provide entertainment for everyone along the harbour, and at the fish and chip shop as Babes was towed home at five knots. Anthony was waiting at the ramp with the trailer, so I jumped aboard to be catapulted by the crew for the final few metres onto the trailer, first time , Phew!

Best of all, they let Hawk steer the rescue boat almost the whole way home. He took the responsibility seriously and loved it. Tomorrow’s school show and tell sorted.

I’m already a Coastguard member, but after today I’ll be buying every Coastguard Lottery ticket I can and happily donating whenever I’m asked. Huge thanks to the Raglan Coastguard crew. What an incredible service. A few lessons learnt and another adventure we’ll be laughing about for years. taken in Raglan, New Zealand by @angeaotearoa

Feels like we’ve got our life back and it’s richer than ever.

It started with Anthony’s birthday, celebrating with family and friends a milestone that, at one point, we weren’t sure he’d ever reach. Then came Matariki, where we started a lifelong tradition: slow-cooked oxtail, garlic mashed potatoes, and a table full of family and friends.

We had Mum and Dad here, along with Anthony’s kids, and somewhere over the last four and a half years, the formalities disappeared. Everyone comes and goes, makes themselves at home, heads to the beach, opens the fridge, puts the kettle on, and eventually finds themselves around the table for whatever over-the-top meal I’ve decided to cook that night.

Our evenings ended with a Star Bath. On Matariki night we sat under the stars with old family friends and their daughter, watching shooting star after shooting star, including one so big it looked like a comet. We haven’t seen another one since. It felt like the sky had turned it on just for Matariki.

Dad and I fished the harbour, and we took Anthony’s boat out for the first time since before his big operation. Dad even started joining me on my sunrise walks, getting our steps in together.

Watching Mum and Dad become part of our little Raglan community has been one of the best parts. Friends, neighbours, café staff and shopkeepers excited to see them again. With Raglan, you love the place, and it loves you back.

And then came the most beautiful ending to it all: the arrival of Anthony’s granddaughter, and in many ways, feels like my little granddaughter too. As someone who chose not to have children, I feel incredibly lucky to experience this chapter. She’s absolutely perfect, and it’s remarkable how one tiny person can bring so many people together.

It feels like Matariki did exactly what it’s meant to do for us: reflecting on the past while welcoming new beginnings. taken in Raglan, New Zealand by @angeaotearoa

We were IN the bath when we got a call, out of the blue, from a journalist for Air New Zealand’s Kia Ora magazine.

Did a 5 min interview and never told him 😆

So grateful for our little plug in here. Such an incredible magazine, absolutely stacked full of amazing NZ stories.

Thanks @airnz 🙌🏼

If you’re not flying this June you can check it out online and via the Kia Ora app ✅

43 years of friendship.

Zero signs of maturity.

Fab as always catch up with Carla, doing the things we have loved doing together for decades, early morning adventures, naps, Indian food, baths. real and goofy chats, jump photos, singing, ocean dips, coffee.

I recieved such a beautiful card too. It’s amazing to have someone who knows you intricately, who you’ve been through so much with, and they can still point out new and wonderful things to ponder. Such an eloquent, wonderful friend. My life is so much sweeter and more meaningful with Carla in it 🙌🏼

We even had the ‘hard to pin down’ Uptown Brown join us for an arvo. We went out, 3 Up on the JetSki, in so many warm layers but forgot about faces and the rain felt like hail!! But then it calmed down enough for a hoooon. I wanna do it again already 🥳

My poor drone, can’t believe she’s still alive and kicking. She was descending by mistake in the second JetSki video- I was leaning on the ‘down’ lever OMG. Close call. taken in Raglan, New Zealand by @angeaotearoa

Our first Star Bath installation in Raglan 🌟

This beauty found its home with an amazing local family, who also welcome Airbnb guests to stay.

And yes, it looks gorgeous. But the best part is how much it’s being used.

Daily, by Dad and the kids, who choose it over the indoor bath every time.

Before this, they had an old clawfoot bath that was too small, lost heat quickly, and needed constant topping up.

They wanted something a bit bigger and deeper, warmer, more water efficient and easy to keep clean.

Now it’s part of everyday family life, handling heavy use, kids, guests, and weather exactly as intended.

A proper outdoor bath, built for real outdoor bathing.

Not just for special occasions.

For the rituals that become part of family life.

I’ve always been fascinated by the West Coast of the South Island but had never been there, so I was pretty excited when one of our WLB clients wanted us to come to their offices in Greymouth. Much to our client’s horror, there was only ever one place we were going to stay, the (formerly) Blackball Hilton, and it didn’t disappoint.

We flew into Hokitika, and the weather was glorious for our 24-hour jaunt. Two delicious whitebait meals, a ghost in room 7, a Fawlty Towers–esque crabby patron, driftwood antics and rock collecting, the Pike River memorial, an awesome workshop with our client, Hokitika Gorge, a swim at Lake Kaniere, and the most incredible lolly shop.

Seamless trip back, HOK-CHCH-AKL-RAGS aside from having to continually run and hide from a prolific mansplainer. Home at 11pm on the dot. Loved it. As always, exceptional chats, laughs and singalongs with @vamped. Song chosen because it’s been in my head for a fortnight and we (I) thrashed it on this trip. taken in Blackball, New Zealand by @angeaotearoa

Just took complete fishing novice @vamped out across the Raglan bar to my fav spot for a quick fish today . There wasn’t a dull moment - it was ON. Fish were biting HARD. And came back over the bar in pretty gnarly (fun!) outgoing tide. Such a great time, it happened so fast it feels like a blur. We stopped to gut the fish, have a swim and teach Chantelle how to hold a fish for photos. Haha. This is the first of many times, what a hoot.

Have also added a bunch of recent pics of great time, esp down in Qtown / Clyde with Mum 😍 taken in Raglan, New Zealand by @angeaotearoa

It’s our WLB celebration get-together next week, and it wouldn’t be a proper hang without serving some fish I caught.

That was vaguely on my mind when I saw Raglan Charter on Facebook saying conditions were beaut for Wednesday and there were spaces.

I signed up because I really wanted fish, and I don’t consider myself much of a line fisherman, so it felt like the surer thing.

I got down to the wharf at 6.45am… and there was no one there.

Turns out it had been cancelled because of low numbers, and a mix-up meant I didn’t get the memo.

Conditions were stunning, so I thought, fuck it, I’ll take the ski out.

I got to my fav spot in 8.5m, drift fished and caught a legal but small snapper, which I put back out of respect for Tangaroa. Then I dropped the anchor and sent the berley down.

And holy heck, it was ON.

Great big pannies coming up… then a shark bit off the sinker and one of the hooks on my rod, leaving one rod with just a single hook.

I had a lonely blue mao mao in the freezer that I brought to try as bait. I’d already filleted both sides, so I chucked the frame on the hook and cast it out just to see what would happen.

Something hit it so hard…but didn’t hook up.

So I put a whole pilly on and cast again.

Boom. Huge snapper.

Did it again, pulled up a bronzie, which thankfully pulled off and left me my hook.

I cast again…

And caught the biggest snapper I’ve ever line-caught.
