We are teaching arts students the wrong success metrics.

Most arts programs still measure activity.

Students served.
Events produced.
Programs launched.

But funders do not fund activity.

They fund outcomes.

And that gap is not just a funding problem.
It starts in education.

If we are not teaching the next generation of arts leaders how to measure human impact in real time, we are preparing them to inherit the same funding frustration we have navigated for decades.

Entrepreneurship cannot just be hustle.

It has to be measurable public value.

Not as theory.
As infrastructure.

The future of arts funding will belong to institutions that can demonstrate transformation, not just participation.

So here is the question:

Are we preparing students to produce programs or to produce measurable public value?

Youngest of seven.

Hand-me-down pajamas.
Oversized music stand.

I wasn’t conducting.
I was learning how to be heard.

Lesson learned early:
You don’t get heard by being louder.
You get heard by being relevant.

That truth still drives my work today.

Whether we’re talking about the arts, leadership, or funding, people don’t lean in because we demand it — they lean in because we connect what we say to what matters most to them.

Last week, I joined 75+ arts leaders at Camp McDowell for the 2025 Bill Bates Leadership Institute, hosted by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

We spent two days diving into Pre-Advocacy—the step before advocacy that builds the language and tools to show the arts as problem-solvers.

The energy in the room was inspiring. These leaders are reframing their impact through the Return on Art™ Framework and proving that arts advocacy is about more than budgets—it’s about belonging, empathy, and confidence.

Alabama arts leaders = heroes of this story.

Headcounts don’t turn heads anymore.

At this year’s Alabama Conference of Theatre, I shared why funders invest in change, not just numbers. Ticket sales and attendance tell one story, but outcomes like confidence, belonging, and job readiness tell a much deeper one.

The best part? Arts leaders in Alabama are already leaning into this shift. In their own schools and organizations, they’re starting to reframe the arts as problem-solvers, not “extras.”

That’s the conversation I’m proud to see spreading across the country.
