What’s that saying?

“If God put it in your heart, it’s not going anywhere, no matter how long you ignore it, it will keep burning.”

I have worn many career hats since 2019. I have evolved in ways I never imagined, changed roles, grown, pivoted. But one thing that hasn’t changed, that has only grown louder with the years, is my resolve to help secondary school students and early career professionals find their way.

The divide between the current world of work and our school curriculum is staggering.

According to the World Economic Forum, 44% of workers’ skills are expected to change within the next five years, yet our classrooms are still teaching many students for jobs that no longer exist.

This is why career education is important to me.
And I hope that in the next few years, you and I can bridge this divide. One book at a time. One outreach at a time. One video at a time.

One of my goals for the year is to organise as many career outreaches as I can in underserved communities.

Yesterday was the first of many in partnership with @sdsnnigeria for my own a school project.

I started with a career counseling session and then we talked about branding, non-traditional career paths and opportunities, the importance of education and how it’s role in their career aspirations and lastly we dived deep into the SDGs and what role they can play in achieving the SDGs by 2030.

But I don’t want this to be a one off thing, there’s so much more to pass on to these kids in various communities like : Professional skills, the concept of purpose, dealing with failure and rejections, scholarships and opportunities, digital work, CV writing workshops and so much more.

So if this is something that you’d love to, whether it’s helping to take various sessions, counseling, sharing your story or even teaching a skill, please reach out to me.

I got so emotional editing this reel because it reminded me of my last days as an undergraduate, sending out loads of well tailored applications instead of celebrating and catching my breath. I had a job but I wanted to have a better job waiting for me after graduation.

Funny how even though, none of those applications worked out, other things did.

So to the person worried sick about life after graduation, I am sorry, but there is really no template. My best advice to you is to shorten the time between getting an idea and actually executing the idea. Because that seemingly small idea can literally change your life but you’ll never know unless you start.

So if You know you should take that next step, please take it and be fast about it. Indecisive people are more likely to struggle.

Truth is, some things may not work out, but other things will. So please show up for the things that are working out because some of the best opportunities and moments of your life, will be totally unplanned.

You cannot place demands on a team you have not trained.

Of course, there are exceptions. If you hire an expert or consultant specifically because they already have the expertise, you can expect them to deliver. That is part of what you are paying for.

But for most staff roles, especially in small businesses and startups, you have to train people.

You cannot explain something once and expect them to get it perfectly forever.

You will explain it again.

You will correct mistakes.

You will answer questions you thought you had already answered.

And that does not mean you hired the wrong person.

Operational work requires constant learning.

Set clear expectations.

Build your SOPs so people are not constantly guessing what to do.

Create simple reporting systems so you know what is happening without having to chase everybody.

And training does not have to be expensive.

It can be a book.

A YouTube video.

A recorded training from the last time you explained something.

A simple document showing, “This is how we do things here.”

The goal is not to become so hands-on that nobody can do anything without you.

It is to give people enough clarity and training to do the work, enough room to get things wrong, and enough feedback to get better.

Because sometimes the problem is not that your staff cannot do the job.

I used to be a professional snail.
Way before I started @BookBlissOnline, I was very much the type of person to retreat into my shell at every inconvenience.

And it was not even that I was giving up.

I just had this habit of putting everything else on pause because something bad had happened.

Then BookBlissOnline happened.

And somehow, no body send your papa. 😂

You could have just had your heart broken and there is an issue at work that nobody else can handle.

Omo, cry your cry but fix the issue at hand.

I would literally wipe my tears, answer the phone and say, “Okay, what happened?”

And honestly, I love it for me: this realization that something going wrong does not mean everything has to stop.

That I can be disappointed and still show up.

I can be sad and still make a decision.

I can have a terrible day and still handle what needs to be handled.

And I think that is one of the unexpected gifts of building.
Whatever you build, builds your capacity too. It teaches you, stretches you,

Hardens some parts, while Softening others.

And slowly, almost without noticing, you become someone who can carry things you once thought would completely undo you.

So yes, @bookblissonline has grown.

But so have I.

And I really, really love this version of me that has learnt not to hold on to every bad thing so tightly.
