Michigander with a fly fishing problem

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It may be 80 degrees here today, but fall is certainly in full swing in SE Michigan.

For me, it brings mixed feelings; switching out dries for streamers and nymph rigs just doesn’t bring the same excitement. Fishing gets slow and the impending winter pushes fish deeper.

That said, there are always a few days like today where I can get my last fixes of top water fun. 🍁

Some of my most useful fly gear is $30 or less…

This rod clip has saved me from stepping on rods countless times. When you take the low cost of something like that and add long-term benefits like shenanigan protection, you get a piece of gear punching way above its weight.

Of course, there’s always the other end of the spectrum, like $300 nippers. 🤣

What are some of your low cost, high value pieces of fly gear?

Fly fishing is the methamphtamine of the angling world.

This is the analogy I gave to the group of trad fishermen I was fishing with over vacation this summer. They all had spin reels - and were serving up healthy doses of night crawlers and cut-up perch.

One after another, they pulled out bluegill, perch, rock bass, several monster bowfins, and even a pretty cool (albeit, tiny) sculpin. Meanwhile, I’d cast and cast… and cast…, change flies, untangle line, cast more, untangle line, swear, change flies… on and on. Over 3 days, I managed to catch 1 fish a day.

“Why do you do that? Don’t you like catching fish? Why don’t you just use a spin reel & some bait?” I have no good answers really… other than, it’s just not the same. For some reason, I can’t stop though. Fortunately, you don’t rot your teeth fly fishing.
