Michigander with a fly fishing problem

I’ve been thinking a lot about fly patterns lately. There must be thousands of them out there. Different sizes, colors, materials, and endless variations of just about everything.

We spend all this time tying or picking out the perfect fly, trying to match exactly what the fish are eating.

Then you get on the water, catch a few fish, and suddenly that perfect fly is missing half its hackle, the dubbing is coming apart, and it barely resembles what you tied on in the first place.

But it keeps catching fish, so there’s no way you’re changing it! 😂

And how many of us have boxes full of flies but end up using the same handful over and over?

Not to mention the old standbys. Woolly Buggers, Pheasant Tails, Adams. They’ve been catching fish for generations, and they’re still getting it done.

Funny how we have all these new patterns and materials to choose from, but sometimes the old basics, or even a half-destroyed fly, are all you need.

What’s your go-to fly? The one you always seem to come back to?
