‘’why am I condemned for ever, katharine, to feel what I can’t express?’’

‘’i sometimes think that poetry isn’t so much what we write as what we feel’’

5/5 🌟

summary:
set in london, early 20th century. the novel revolves around two men & two women who navigate love, marriage, work, and their place in edwardian society. katharine hilbery struggles between her family’s expectations & her own desire for independence whilst finding herself caught between two men from different social classes, whereas mary datchet dedicates herself to the women’s suffrage movement. through their intersecting lives, virginia woolf explores societal expectations and raises the question whether love and marriage are essential to a meaningful life.

thoughts
enjoyed this one a lot! i think i resonate with katharine quite a bit, mostly in her tendency in observing, contemplating and walking around london hahah. no surprise, virginia woolf always writes so beautifully about solitude and the difficulty of expressing what we feel. i really liked how she explores class differences and different ambitions, it was also interesting to see the changing attitudes towards marriage and the wider social changes taking place in edwardian society, as well as getting a glimpse into the suffrage movement through mary’s perspective.

I think I mostly really liked its reflections on coming to terms with change and the passage of time, as I always seem to find myself doing the same during autumn 🍁 a very memorable read for me 🧸.. but ngl it does gets a bit confusing sometimes since katharine changes her mind a lot 😅 but still very enjoyable ! by @anisaslibrary
