This week on &&& Triple Ampersand, we are publishing “The Fold, the Grid & the Void” by Ana Marinković.

The essay starts with the Backrooms, the 2019 image of yellow wallpaper and damp carpet posted to 4chan that grew into internet lore and has now reached the multiplex. Ana Marinković reads it through Mark Fisher’s eerie, a failure of presence in which human architecture carries on without human life, and treats the entities added to those corridors later as a retreat into a more consumable kind of fear.

The argument pivots on what the in-between does to identity. Where Marc Augé read the transit corridor as a site of modern alienation, the essay reads anonymity there as relief from forced legibility. Against Victor Turner’s account of liminality as a bridge between two fixed social positions, Ana Marinković proposes the fold, where A and B become two faces of one surface pressed together across a void, and argues for permanent liminality as an unscripted existence rather than a crisis on the way to enclosure.

Our Certificate Student Ana Marinković @anksyee has published “Feminist Data as Resistance: Algorithmic Bias and Bodily Autonomy in Contemporary Media Art” in AM Journal of Art and Media Studies (Issue No. 38, October 2025), where she analyzes how anti-gender actors exploit digital technologies, including surveillance, reproductive monitoring, and the weaponization of meme culture, to enforce their norms, and how feminist media art can function as counter-systems to algorithmic bias by prototyping liberatory alternatives.
