This week on &&& Triple Ampersand, we are publishing “The Fold, the Grid & the Void” by Ana Marinković.

The essay starts with the Backrooms, the 2019 image of yellow wallpaper and damp carpet posted to 4chan that grew into internet lore and has now reached the multiplex. Ana Marinković reads it through Mark Fisher’s eerie, a failure of presence in which human architecture carries on without human life, and treats the entities added to those corridors later as a retreat into a more consumable kind of fear.

The argument pivots on what the in-between does to identity. Where Marc Augé read the transit corridor as a site of modern alienation, the essay reads anonymity there as relief from forced legibility. Against Victor Turner’s account of liminality as a bridge between two fixed social positions, Ana Marinković proposes the fold, where A and B become two faces of one surface pressed together across a void, and argues for permanent liminality as an unscripted existence rather than a crisis on the way to enclosure.

It was such a joy to lead the first day of workshops for @parasite.hk’s Workshops for Arts Professionals this summer ☀️

We started the morning with a Monday Chatroom session, getting to know the participants and their positions on art and tech today. The afternoon session focused more on identifying challenges and areas for growth in our fields, and devising possible solutions to address them. I shared numerous projects from Web3, including (and especially) ones that failed, as case studies for how we might intervene.

Thank you again to the entire Para Site team, and especially to @lookstefan and @yuenyukl, who nudged me to look back at my learnings from Web3. It is my time building and learning and curating in Web3 that taught me how much value there is in embodied research, and I appreciated the opportunity to look back at projects and spaces that I have held close to me, even if they did cease.

I look forward to seeing how you all continue to build 🧚

2026 Para Site Workshops for Arts Professionals
17 24-30 August 2026
° Hong Kong
The 9th edition of our Workshops for Arts Professionals runs alongside the International Conference,
‘Unsubscribe All!’! This year, we’re diving into where contemporary art meets technology - beyond inevitability narratives, towards alternative
methodologies for artistic production, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.
Rather than treating tech as a ‘black box’, we approach it as socially embedded infrastructure shaping our environments, languages, and communities. With a regional focus on Asia-Pacific, the programme tackles resource sharing, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and equitable access.

Our Certificate Student Ana Marinković @anksyee has published “Feminist Data as Resistance: Algorithmic Bias and Bodily Autonomy in Contemporary Media Art” in AM Journal of Art and Media Studies (Issue No. 38, October 2025), where she analyzes how anti-gender actors exploit digital technologies, including surveillance, reproductive monitoring, and the weaponization of meme culture, to enforce their norms, and how feminist media art can function as counter-systems to algorithmic bias by prototyping liberatory alternatives.
