RANGGELN
@westlichtvienna

15.9 - 12.11. 2023

very happy to announce that I will show a excerpt of my ongoing project „ Like Father, Like Son“ in the upper gallery at westlicht Vienna.

My exhibition will take place simultaneously with the annual WORLD PRESS PHOTO exhibition.

Would be very happy to see some of you around :)

Opening THURSDAY at 7pm

RANGGELN is a old martial art, tightly woven to the costumes and traditions of some regions of the Bavarian and Austrian countryside. This is one of several clubs I visited for my long term project „Like father, Like Son“ where I focused on different forms of traditional male-dominated activities in the countryside.

Kilian & Hubert, Hundstein, 2024

Every year, on the last Sunday of July, people from different villages gather on top of Mount Hundstein, a 2117 meter high peak in the Salzburg Alps, to take part in a ritual to date back to Celtic times.

For several years, I have returned to this mountain to observe the community surrounding this tradition.

What draws me back is not only the competition itself, but also the myths and stories that exist behind it and continue to be passed on through generations.
Approaching this tradition as an outsider, trying to understand its meaning while also reflecting on my own position, has opened up questions about community, belonging and competition beyond the Ritual itself. by @anna.aicher

Yesterday, Der Greif published an article by @ilariasponda , bringing together two very different bodies of work and the communities around them.

It’s always interesting to see your own work through someone else’s perspective, and I’m grateful to have my work featured by @der_greif

Thank you, Ilaria, for this interesting dialogue and for bringing these works into conversation with one another.

Thank you also to all the Rangglers for sharing your tradition with me and welcoming me into your community. What may appear to be a fight is, in reality, a peaceful form of competition that inspired many reflections and sparked countless thoughts within me and others.

A little side note: I’d love to publish a Book focused entirely on this very Special Tradition and Community one day. If any publishers are interested in helping bring it to life feel free to get in touch. ◡̈

Eva & Lisa
for die Zeit 26

As a woman, I find it difficult to maintain emotional distance from this assignment.

Lisa and Eva are Sisters and were victims of sexual violence. Listening to their story while photographing them for an article for Die Zeit deeply moved and affected me. It makes me angry and sad to hear that crimes like these so often remain without meaningful consequences.

Being in the studio together and trying to create images that help their story be heard reminded me of photography’s power. I was deeply moved by the solidarity they share, as well as by the openness and courage it took to tell this story.
