OPEN CALL: IN FOCUS PHOTOBOOK FEATURE (3RD EDITION) 📖✨

In a world of fast image flows, the photobook remains a place for slowness, intention, and depth.

We’re officially open for submissions for our 3rd edition! We invite artists, self-publishers, and presses to submit recently published photobooks and artist books. We want to see works that challenge, expand, or reimagine the medium, from intimate self-published projects to experimental press releases.

Selected works will receive a dedicated editorial feature in Der Greif’s Articles section and international visibility within our global community. Submissions are reviewed on an ongoing basis by our editorial team, Ilaria Sponda (@ilariasponda) and Carolina Semprucci (@cachius).

📸 Swipe to see past features of books by Anna Aicher (@anna.aicher), Lorenzo Bacci (@lbacci_) & Marcell Swann (@marcellswann), and Henri Airo (@henri.airo).

Photo# by Amelie Sachs (@amelie.sachs).

#GreifEvents: Reflecting on “Read Against the Machine,” a collaboration between Der Greif and @mrofoundation during @rencontresarles 2026. Together, we invited photographers and image-makers to resist automated interpretation and reclaim the social act of looking.

Selected artists participated in a collective editing workshop or Face-to-Face portfolio reviews, culminating in a public screening at MRO Foundation on July 10. Thanks to the support of @kreativmuenchen, five Munich-based artists received a travel allowance of up to €250 to attend the festival and share their practices.

Get to know the five Munich-based talents who joined us in Arles:

⭐ Laetitia Vançon (@laetitiavancon), a photojournalist whose work connects intimate personal experiences with broader social issues, focusing on human resilience, vulnerability, and the quiet routines that persist through conflict.
⭐ Amelie Sachs (@amelie.sachs), a documentary photographer and picture editor who uses a feminist perspective and research-based approach to combine documentary and conceptual elements, uncovering overlooked realities.
⭐ Francesco Giordano (@francescogiordano._), a queer visual artist and curator whose practice centers on LGBTQIA+ issues, migration, and memory culture, creates spaces where marginalized perspectives become visible.
⭐ Anna Aicher (@anna.aicher), a documentary and portrait photographer who captures old traditions, rituals, and autobiographical stories nestled within rapidly changing communities.
⭐ Ewelina Bialoszewska (@ewelina_bialoszewska), a visual artist working with photography, printmaking, and archival materials to reflect on identity, roots, uprooting, and the experience of living between places.

Swipe through to see glimpses of their work. In collaboration with @mrofoundation and supported by @kreativmuenchen.

#InFocus: “In Focus” is Der Greif’s photobook review series, spotlights our picks from the current open call for submissions and our community artists most recent publications.

This month, we highlight a duo of photobooks about masculinity and community between reality and cultural myth: “Like Father, Like Son” by Anna Aicher (@anna.aicher) and “American Beef” by Lorenzo Bacci (@lbacci_) and Marcel Swann (@marcelswann), published by King Koala Press (@kingkoalapress). From the disciplined rituals of lower Bavarian and Austrian village life to the high-stakes adrenaline of American backyard fight clubs, the quest for identity is often written on the body and the culture inscribed within physical rituals. Though separated by miles and different cultural contexts, both works grapple with the same question: How do certain places inform rituals and eventually shape masculinity and the spectacle of its performance today?
