What happens when the timber of the future is not straight, perfect and standardized?

A look back at Robotics Thinking Assemblies at Angermuseum Erfurt — a project exhibition that did not simply present results, but made an open field of research visible.

At its centre were crooked, slender and irregular timbers: thinning wood that is often considered low-value or difficult to use. In the context of climate-resilient forests and changing regional timber stocks, precisely this material is becoming increasingly relevant.

The exhibition shifts the perspective: away from the idealized building material, towards material with deviations, specific qualities and constructive potential.

On view were models, material samples, work fragments and processes at the intersection of digital construction, robotic fabrication, material research, teaching and public outreach.

The exchange that followed was especially valuable. The conversations made clear that this is not only a technical question, but a shift in architectural practice: How do we design when material is no longer anonymous, standardized and endlessly available?

These questions connect to broader concerns in architectural research today: how existing resources, material cycles, 1:1 prototypes and situated interventions can shape new forms of practice. The exhibition opened a field for further collective research — between forest, workshop, robot, museum, university and construction site.

Many thanks to the Speculative Engineering Institute, Angermuseum Erfurt, Fachhochschule Erfurt and everyone involved for the invitation, the inspiring conversations and the shared work on these questions.

We are pleased to welcome Anna Bajanova and Widjaja Martokusumo to the opening of »Robotics Thinnings Assemblies« on July 30 17:00 at Angermuseum. The open event includes a brief tour through the exhibition with many of its student authors. Feel free to come and join the discussion!

The exhibition presents thinnings — an underused and underrated resource — as a building material for future construction with emerging technologies. The experimental works ask what instigates when we begin seeing crooked, slender timber not as substandard, but as potential. They bring together robotic fabrication, material research, and engineering. The material, in all its irregularities, is used as a design driver for new structural approaches to building. The work deliberately takes its cues from the changing timber inventory of Thuringia's climate-resilient forests.

On display are models, material samples, and work fragments by a range of student authors, drawn from integrated teaching, research, and public education with partners like @joschinger and @holz21regio. In accompanying formats such as the SPENI Kinder-Uni, even the youngest visitors get a playful introduction to questions of making structures with material knowledge. The exhibition is a satellite to the »Werkschau 2026« @fherfurt_architektur.

The project is funded by CZS Forschungsstart and CZS Wissenschaftskommunikation by @carl_zeiss_stiftung. Thanks for support to the Landeshauptstadt @erfurt_de and KinderUni Erfurt.

STRUCTURES OF CARE — FIELD TEST

Somewhere between scientific fieldwork and an artistic hypothesis:

a full-scale test of how support might meet a living structure — through scale, contact, balance and load.

No final solution yet. The tree has not approved the prototype either.

Research in progress for living infrastructure and more-than-human life.

Ruin or support?
A structure inside a living tree.
At first glance, it is hard to tell whether it was abandoned and taken over by nature — or whether it is still holding the tree.
For Tree Repair, this ambiguity is the point: care does not disappear. It becomes visible. taken in Berlin, Germany by @anna_bajanova

This year I was lucky enough to catch the April Fools’ Day exhibition. As I later discovered — one of the major art events in Bishkek and, arguably, all of Central Asia. But I’m not obsessed with the status. I’m obsessed with the place.
The exhibition was held at the National Museum of Fine Arts named after Gaypara Aitiev — the most important, the most prestigious. But contemporary art couldn’t find a place there in the literal sense. It was put in a ventilation shaft — adjacent to the wall of the main hall, essential but invisible. Foucault would call this a perfect heterotopia: a parallel world through the wall, where the official museum prefers not to look. Contemporary art in Bishkek exists like ventilation — necessary, but pushed out of sight.
My work “Not-So-Young Guard” (немолодая гвардия) ended up there outside the competition, almost by accident. But you couldn’t imagine a more fitting place.
15 graphic sheets — 3D scans of old elm and spruce trees from the Young Guard boulevard, with crutches and supports drawn onto them. The boulevard is dedicated to the guards who defended the homeland in World War II. But the aging trees stand there like veterans too — amputated, crooked, holding on. Fighters for clean air and clear sky. How much time do they have left? Where are their medals?
And these veterans of clean air were hung in a ventilation shaft. For those who don’t know — smog in Bishkek is one of the serious health and environmental problems. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Sometimes accidents are more precise than any intention.
But this is just one detail — you could write about this exhibition forever. It’s like a mountain stream: not deep, but strong. Step in just a little — and it’ll carry you away. #bishkek #contemporaryart #studiomuseum #centralasia @ulanmuseum @malika.u.m taken in Национальный музей искусств имени Гапара Айтиева by @anna_bajanova

FIX IT!
Natural Monument – White Mulberry Tree
Planted by the Huguenots around the year 1780 to feed silkworms.
Despite its vitality and historical significance, the tree was once slated for removal.

Through great effort, it has now been preserved – for it is not only built monuments that tell our history.
The living world around us is equally worthy of appreciation and protection.

The first row of reversible prostheses from the Otto Hetzer truss has now found its place at our outdoor experimental site at @fherfurt_architektur.
The topography of this historic roof beam offers space for experimentation, uniting the art of repair with a forward-looking vision for circular practice.

Students from #speni’s architecture programs built a custom timber support frame, enabling safe storage and further study on-site — once again made possible through the generous support of @deutschebahn.

Together with @speculativeengineering and @jenscasper, the Unbuilding Group continues to explore construction not as a static state, but as a layered, circular, and interdependent process.

Heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to this careful relocation, precise Bestandsaufnahme, and the first proposals.
The project will continue to grow — a vivid reminder of how many solutions can be imagined for a single structural challenge.
