What if digital technology could help us work with what already exists?

In his teaching at UdK Berlin, our Professor Giovanni Betti explored exactly that: using 3D scanning to turn irregular construction waste and forestry residues into digital catalogues, designing with them, and then physically building from the same materials.

Material → scan → catalogue → design → build.

A great example of how digital tools can open new ways of working with imperfect, irregular and existing materials rather than simply replacing them.

This work is now featured in Digitale Ensembles in der künstlerischen Lehre, documenting five years of the InKüLe project at UdK Berlin.

We are very happy to see Giovanni’s experiments included in this publication, and to see this approach to digital design, material reuse and hands-on making continuing in his work at German International University.

We are pleased to welcome Anna Bajanova and Widjaja Martokusumo to the opening of »Robotics Thinnings Assemblies« on July 30 17:00 at Angermuseum. The open event includes a brief tour through the exhibition with many of its student authors. Feel free to come and join the discussion!

The exhibition presents thinnings — an underused and underrated resource — as a building material for future construction with emerging technologies. The experimental works ask what instigates when we begin seeing crooked, slender timber not as substandard, but as potential. They bring together robotic fabrication, material research, and engineering. The material, in all its irregularities, is used as a design driver for new structural approaches to building. The work deliberately takes its cues from the changing timber inventory of Thuringia's climate-resilient forests.

On display are models, material samples, and work fragments by a range of student authors, drawn from integrated teaching, research, and public education with partners like @joschinger and @holz21regio. In accompanying formats such as the SPENI Kinder-Uni, even the youngest visitors get a playful introduction to questions of making structures with material knowledge. The exhibition is a satellite to the »Werkschau 2026« @fherfurt_architektur.

The project is funded by CZS Forschungsstart and CZS Wissenschaftskommunikation by @carl_zeiss_stiftung. Thanks for support to the Landeshauptstadt @erfurt_de and KinderUni Erfurt.

What if we saw crooked, slender timber not as substandard, but as potential? From July 30 to August 11, 2026, the exhibition »Robotics Thinnings Assemblies« at Angermuseum presents thinnings — an underused and underrated resource — as a building material for future construction with emerging technologies.

Now resting at our outdoor experimental site at @fherfurt_architektur: the Otto Hetzer truss has found its temporary home. Students from #speni’s architecture and civil engineering programs constructed a purpose-built timber support frame, enabling safe storage and further examination on-site.

This relocation, once again realized with the valuable support of @deutschebahn, marks the start of the second phase of »Prosthesis«, our design-based teaching and research format.

Together with associate researchers @anna_bajanova (@udkberlin) and @jenscasper, the @unbuildinggroup continues to rethink construction not as a static condition, but as a layered, circular, and interdependent process — guided by critical inquiry and material practice.

Sincere thanks to all who contributed to this carefully orchestrated transition.

The next chapter in our design-based research format »Unbuilding Group«: a 14-meter glulam truss — more than 110 years old and originally fabricated by Thuringian timber pioneer Otto Hetzer — was carefully prepared to travel to the campus of @fherfurt_architektur for further steps. Students from #speni assisted in demounting and securing the structure to work with it on our experimental outside premises.

After carefully dismantling, 3D scanning and developing of a concept for logistics, this recovery from the future »ICE City« construction site in Erfurt was realized with the generous support of @deutschebahn . Lifted by crane and secured for transport, the physical dislocation of our truss now marks the start of the upcoming second phase of our teaching format »Prosthesis« – as material witness, object of inquiry, and collaborator.

The project is developed in close dialogue with our associate researchers @anna_bajanova (@udkberlin ) and @jenscasper from the @unbuildinggroup, a collaborative format within and beyond SPENI to rethink construction as a process of ongoing transformation — circular, layered, and interdependent. Thanks to everyone involved for the sensitive handling of material and machines.

🌿 Built Experiments in Circular Design 🌿

Thanks to @baunetz_campus and Sorana Rădulescu for featuring our #circularconstruction work in #Brandenburg.
In Summer 2023, we built the “Material Circle” #Pavilion ⭕ from salvaged construction materials.

These materials now continue their journey as a temporary installation near an abandoned coal mine ⚒️ in #Brandenburg.
Thanks to @anna_bajanova for leading the students and to Vlado Velkow and the @kohlengrube #Kunstverein for providing the space to explore circular practices in this historic site.

From an extraction site to an experimental hub for circular construction ✊
