Frolicing on wheels through my main quest as a Saxophonist and Researcher!

° My book is in its first Conservatoire library!
° I traveled to London to support the very talented saxophonists in their annual competition at Trinity Laban.
+ Some thoughts I've been having over the summer...

While It's good to view disability through the social model with the lens that society is what places the barriers that cause us to become disadvantaged;

It is not as simple for disabled musicians/artists. On this journey as a musician, I am having an internal battle with myself to face the medical side of my disability, as well as continuing to advocate for equity and pursue a career.

I am a musician, I am disabled. Society should not treat them as conflicting identities, instead working to meet access needs and promote inclusion.

For the individual though, I think recognition for the conflict is needed.

It's not talked about.

It can feel like you're losing your musician identity when your disability is overwhelming your time. If there's one person reading this who has ever felt less than a musician because of the body you're in, you are not alone.
Being a musician is physically demanding for the healthiest of bodies, don't be hard on yourself. Look after the body you home so future creations can be made. taken in Trinity Laban Conservatoire Of Music and Dance by @annabelle.dux

November 20th to December 20th is Disability History Month. You probably didn't know this and admittedly neither did I. Why? Because until 2010 there wasn't one. My field of study (music and disability studies) only emerged as a distinct field around 2004. Compare this to the UK's recognition of black history month in 1978 and woman's history week in the late 1980s, we're really far behind.

Why should you care? Because today's voices are the future historians records.

And with graduation complete, I will now hibernate 'till Christmas.

As I have come to the end of my time at @trinitylaban it's time to make the next chapter happen... 🎓

This could have been avoided with two simple steps...

° All grounds staff or staff members in this department need to be trained how to use a stair lift.

° Change the phone number on the sign saying to call for assistance to a member of staff that knows how to use the equipment.

For my first competition, I went national, and won first in my RP2 female category.

A massive thank you to @chalkandchats for creating a community in which my confidence in climbing has grown. With the close guidance of @matt_westy_styleswest I couldn't have done it. Thank you to everyone I met yesterday and will meet on this journey, especially @dazzle_uk, and @270climbing + the setters for this awesome wall and @teambmc

My first route I missed a slightly higher foot which might have kept me on the wall. My second route I am beyond pleased with, I got so close and I'll blame the conditions on this one. In the finals, after 6 hours of isolation due to being delayed, my hands had started to swell, I was SO fatigued and I lost dexterity to hold those gnarly crimps.

(While I was the only one in my category, I'm thrilled to have brought this category into the British Nationals)

I'm in awe of what my body allowed me to achieve yesterday and severely paying for my audacity to push myself today. The last 9 months of broken bones, progressing illness, hospital visits and admission, wisdom teeth removal surgery at the start of the week, no solid food for the days leading up, only to bleed through 6 tampons whilst in isolation, I think I did alright. taken in 270 Climbing Park by @annabelle.dux

In a world where I wasn't born with a rare disease, I'd be a full-time performing musician, living naively to the institutionalised ablism, unable to connect to students of minorities, and creating music with less passion. There would be a wall between my music and the audience that I'd never break down.

I didn't want to spend time telling my story, or experience in depth this awareness month. Recent complications of my faulty genes are just too raw and my team of doctors and I are still scrambling to keep organs in my body and joints connected to my skeleton.

So I just put this together, a reminder that sickness is not a thief of creation. A life of hope can be a life of sickness. Strength comes from the response to resistance. Greatness is the innovation that comes from challenges.

This chapter of my life is called "In-between degrees."

It could be "HELP my body keeps breaking and falling apart and I'm trying to keep up with the world and have fun and make something of this silly little life I've been given" but that's a bit long.
