Tonight we made the really hard decision to say goodbye to Snoop, nine days away from his 16th birthday.

I wanted him to make it to 16 so badly.

Back in June, we thought we were going to lose him. We started talking to Abie about dog heaven then, but Snoop kept going. Somewhere along the way I became completely fixated on 16.

I keep thinking about why that number mattered so much to me. I think maybe I wanted one more milestone with a dog who had been there for nearly every one of mine.

Snoop was there in the early days of Adam and me. The engagement. The wedding. He walked down the aisle. He moved to DC with us, explored a new city, and came along whenever we left to visit family. Lake days. Boat rides. Head out the car window.

Then we moved back to Connecticut and gave him a house and a backyard. He was there through my pregnancy and when we brought Abie home and everything changed.

And then he became Abie’s Snoop.

I watched this dog who had been there for so much of my life become part of the beginning of his. Newborn Abie. First steps. High-chair food hitting the floor. Toddler Abie following him around, talking to him, loving him, growing up beside him.

We’ve been telling Abie since June that when Snoop went to dog heaven, he’d find ways to visit us. Maybe a butterfly or hummingbird. Maybe just a little sign that somehow felt like him.

Tonight, Snoop wasted no time keeping that promise.

We left the vet and the entire sky was bursting with one of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever seen. When we got home, Snoop had left a card and balloons for his best pal Abie. One last reminder that even though he couldn’t see him anymore, Snoop would still find ways to show up.

I don’t know exactly what I believe happens after a life ends. But tonight made it feel impossible to believe that something so loved can simply disappear.

And maybe that’s what I was getting wrong about 16. I thought making it to that birthday would somehow mean we had gotten enough time. But nine more days wouldn’t have done that. Because in the end, the milestones that mattered were all the ones we got to have him there for. by @annabridget

Abraham, my little Abie, today you are ONE! Exactly one year ago I was preparing for my entire life to change. I’ll never forget laying eyes on you for the first time—holding you tight to my chest—and rubbing your teeniest tiniest little feet, in total awe of you. I kept saying, “we did it baby, we did it,” because our labor was a moment we did together, as a team, and we will forever share that experience. And as I look back on this memory-filled year, it’ll always be us, experiencing life together. The ups and downs, the hard, the beautiful.

What an incredible life you have—the best daddy who loves you beyond words, a cozy home, all the toys + books, and a family (+friends) near and far who spoils you with love.

Adam, my rock, what a year. Watching you become a father (and balancing all the things) has been the most beautiful experience. You are such an incredible dad and stop at nothing to make sure our boy is laughing and well fed. Dada.

Welcome to the world, Abie. Our beautiful boy, Abraham “Abie” Beck Greenberg joined us earth side, Monday, January 9th at 10:18pm. Boy, oh boy are we in love—and we’re soaking in all the precious little moments. Friends and family, we can’t wait for you to meet him.
