Next up is the amazing Anna Camner who’s paintings are quite far from the way I work myself, but I find them completely fascinating.

The precision is almost unreal. Her surfaces can look like skin, membranes, liquid, plants or something synthetic, but you’re never quite sure what you’re actually looking at. Beautiful and seductive.

What fascinates me even more is her process.

Anna works wet-on-wet with oil on acrylic panels. She can spend months developing an image in her mind, but once she starts painting there is a race against time before the paint dries. Despite the incredible precision and control, she has described reaching an almost trancelike state where the subconscious begins to take over.

And perhaps that’s where I find an unexpected connection to my own way of painting.

She recently presented Intra-action at @chgallery in Stockholm. Her work is also part of @stahlcollection , where she presented The Weight of Light in 2025.

Internationally, Anna has exhibited extensively, including solo exhibitions in New York and a solo presentation at The Armory Show in 2020. Nominated to the prestigious @arsfennica award 2027

Anna lives and works in Stockholm and is represented by @chgallery and @loyalgallery

Anna Camner’s paintings exist in the space between surrealism and scientific observation. Through a meticulous and technically precise process, she creates enigmatic worlds of organic forms, membranes, tissues, plant-like structures, and fragments of bodies that invite viewers to look closer. 🔬👁️✨

Soft shades of pink, icy blue, and white give her works a quiet, otherworldly atmosphere where the familiar and the unknown merge. 🌱❄️

Anna Camner’s painting moves in the borderland between surrealism and natural scientific observation. 🔬✨

Through a technically precise and slow process, often working on small panels or acrylic glass, Camner creates paintings that invite — and reward — close observation. 👁️

Her motifs appear like microscopic cross-sections of a larger, unknown whole: organic structures, membranes, porous tissues, plant cell-like forms, eyes, gloves and fragments of the body. 🌱🫧

Powdery shades of pink, ice blue and white create a quiet, otherworldly atmosphere — somewhere between the familiar and the mysterious. 💗❄️

🎨 The Ars Fennica 2027 nominees have been announced!
Anna Camner 🇸🇪, Anna Estarriola 🇫🇮, Joel Slotte 🇫🇮 and Sandra Mujinga 🇳🇴.

The recipient will be selected by international curator, writer and cultural strategist Fatoş Üstek. 🌍

🏛️ The group exhibition will be presented at Kiasma from 15 October 2027 to 26 March 2028, before continuing to Kunstsilo in Kristiansand.

The collaboration brings Ars Fennica to Norway and strengthens its Nordic dimension. 🇫🇮🤝🇳🇴

🏆 The prize is €50,000. The recipient will be announced in February 2028.

We are pleased to present our first solo exhibition with Anna Camner. Having launched our representation of Camner in 2025, her works have since been featured at Art Brussels and Art Monte-Carlo in spring 2026.

Anna Camner creates paintings that hover between the tangible and the intangible, blending precise realism with a sense of mystery. Working in oil on acrylic panels, she has developed a highly controlled and time-intensive practice focused on surface and materiality. Employing a wet-on-wet technique, Camner completes each small section of a painting in a single sitting, leaning into the medium's natural fluidity and unpredictability. This spontaneous approach yields soft luminosities and subtle transitions, imbuing her works with a distinctive, breathing quality.

In the new show, 'Intra-action', the focus is on works in monochrome hues, executed with the characteristic level of detail and play between surface and depth. The paintings seem to start from an almost documentary act of observation without, however, ever resolving into clear identification. Her almost monochrome compositions oscillate between exposure and concealment, appearing as bodily or inanimate, natural or manufactured. Often reminiscent of laboratory samples, dreamscapes, or far-off vistas, her luminous, introspective paintings examine how matter changes state and how familiar textures can become strange.

Anna Camner (b. 1977 in Sweden) holds an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art. She has exhibited at Kumamoto Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto (JP), Liljevalchs Konsthall, Loyal Gallery, Wetterling Gallery, Galerie Forsblom, Larsen Warner, Stockholm (SE), Stellan Holm Gallery, New York (USA), and Faggionato Gallery, London (UK). She participated in the International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Cartagena (CO) in 2014 and in a group show in Mumbai (IN). In 2017, she received the Beckers Art Award. Camner’s work is represented in the collections of Magasin III Museum & Foundation for Contemporary Art, Malmö Art Museum, Public Art Agency Sweden, Stockholm konst, Wanås Konst, Ståhl Collection, and UBS Art Collection.
