Anna Mustonen seeks to explore how art can hold space for ambiguity, transformation and shared experience. The Chief Curator of Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki brings a deeply considered approach to her work, most recently as curator of the Nordic Countries Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Her curatorial vision is grounded in inquiry: into myth as a method, the materialisation of inner worlds, and the balance between individual expression and collective resonance. In our recent conversation with Anna, she reflects on constructing symbolic languages, fostering dialogue between distinct artistic practices, and creating exhibitions that invite openness, reflection and lasting connection.

‘How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin?’, the Nordic Countries Pavilion exhibition for this year’s Biennale, will run from 9 May
to 22 November 2026.

Listen to the latest episode of CHART Talks: ‘The Notion of Nordicness and its Potential’ with Helga Christoffersen (@helgachristoffersen), Anna Mustonen (@annamustonen), Klara Kristalova (@hundskogen) and Auður Jörundsdóttir (@audurjor) 🎧✨

Recorded live as part of the Talks Programme at CHART 2025 the episode features a panel discussion exploring the notion of Nordic art, its values, and its future role within the global art world.

Moderated by Helga Christoffersen, Curator-at-Large and Curator of the Nordic Art and Culture Initiative at @buffaloakgartmuseum, the conversation also includes Anna Mustonen, Chief Curator at @kiasmamuseum and Curator of the @nordiccountriespavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition in Venice, Swedish/Czech artist Klara Kristalova, represented at the Nordic Pavilion in 2026, and Auður Jörundsdóttir, Director at @icelandicartcenter in Reykjavík, at the time of recording.

The conversation begins with a behind-the-scenes discussion of the development process for the 2026 presentation at the Pavilion of the Nordic Countries at the Venice Biennale. From this example of Nordic collaboration within the contemporary art world, the panel expands the discussion to a broader context.

Together they reflect on how global perceptions of Nordic art have shifted since the 1990s, and consider the opportunities for sharing and collaboration within the current geopolitical moment. The conversation also addresses tensions within the idea of a shared Nordic identity, noting that for some people it remains a category they actively seek to escape.

Listen to a new episode of the CHART Talks podcast with @_minnnh_ and @annamustonen 🎧

As part of the CHART 2025 Talks Programme, Danish/Vietnamese artist Minh Ngọc Nguyễn joined Anna Mustonen, Chief Curator @kiasmamuseum (which holds four of Nguyễn’s works in its collection) for a conversation on his artistic practice.

Beginning in commercial photography before moving into contemporary art, Nguyễn is fascinated by how images shape our understanding of culture and identity.

The conversation touches on Western representations of Southeast Asian and Vietnamese identity - often oversimplified or exoticised - and how he uses still-life photography to question, process, and reclaim these visual histories and stereotypes. Through this, he works to build a new visual lexicon on his own terms.
